Answer: The completion of the Erie Canal

The completion of the canal, which connected the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes, made Buffalo the western terminus and a major shipping point for finished goods going west and grain and other commodities being shipped east.

McKinley, the 25th President of the United States, was shot by Leo Czolgosz at the Buffalo Exposition. His Vice President, Theodore Roosevelt, was sworn in to succeed him.

Millard Fillmore became the 13th President upon the death of Zachary Taylor in 1850. Fillmore served until 1853. He was not nominated in the 1852 election. He ran in the 1856 election as a Whig but was defeated by James Buchanan. After public life, Fillmore retired to Buffalo where he became the first chancellor of the University of Buffalo. Fillmore died in 1874.

He is interred at Buffalo's Forest Lawn cemetery.
