Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which city is in Germany?

Answer: Neuhof

Corbigny is in France. Segni is in Italy. Chernobyl is in the Ukraine, and is the location of one of the world's worst nuclear disasters of all time. Neuhof is located about 35 miles northeast of Frankfurt am Main.
2. Which city is NOT located in Europe?

Answer: Parramatta

Hrandzichy is in western Belarus. Torre de Moncorvo is in Portugal. Zirl is an Austrian city just west of Innsbruck. Parramatta is a city within Sydney, Australia.
3. Which of these cities is found in Europe?

Answer: Nicosia

All of these cities are capitals. Nicosia, which is the capital of Cyprus, is the only city of the choices found in Europe. Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, is in Asia. Algiers, the capital of Algeria, is in Africa. Quito, the capital of Ecuador, is in South America.
4. The Danish city of Helsingor lies north of Copenhagen on which Danish island?

Answer: Sjaelland

Fyn, Lolland, and Sjaelland are three of the biggest islands of Denmark. Hjelmshoved is a remote island between the mainland and the larger islands.
5. Lampi is on which of these European islands in the Mediterranean Sea?

Answer: Crete

Naxos, Milos, and Crete are all Greek islands in the Mediterranean. Malta is also in the Mediterranean, but it is an independent nation.
6. One of the worst airplane incidents in history was the Pan-Am 103 explosion in late 1988. It happened in what town in southern Scotland?

Answer: Lockerbie

Dumfries is just west of Lockerbie, Carlisle is south of Lockerbie in the English part of the UK, and Edinburgh is farther north and on the coastline of the North Sea. In the 1988 airplane incident, 270 people died in the horrible explosion caused by Libyan terrorists.
7. Formula One racing star Sebastian Vettel, among many other notables, was born in which of these European cities?

Answer: Heppenheim, (West) Germany

Monza is the location of a track Vettel has raced on, Wittgenborn is where he scored his first racing victory as a kid, and Hinwil is just a random town in Switzerland. The reason I put parenthesis around "West" is because he was born before East and West Germany reunited.
8. Which of these European cities does not share a name with a town/city in the United States?

Answer: Lodz, Poland

There is no town or city named Lodz in the United States. Syracuse is in New York, Athens is in Georgia, and St. Petersburg is in Florida.
9. Which city is not the capital of any European country?

Answer: Frankfurt

London, Madrid, and Athens are the capitals of the England, Spain, and Greece respectively. Frankfurt is not the capital of Germany; that title belongs to Berlin.
10. Which city is NOT located on the European mainland?

Answer: Dublin

Dublin is in Ireland, which is an island nation. The other three are all pretty far away from any coastline. Warsaw is in Poland. Zurich is in Switzerland. Sarajevo is in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
