Masada is an ancient fortress built on a hill overlooking the Dead Seaa. King Herod used the foundations to built a palace. Later, it was the scene of a tragic stand-off between Jewish zealots and the Roman army, ending with the mass suicide of the Jews.
Herodion is another palace built by Herod, and is south of Jerusalem. Ovdat is a Nabatean city in the eastern Negev, while Beit Shean is located at the northern end of the Jordan Valley.
