Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these locations, the largest concentration of waterfalls in the world, sits on the border between Argentina and Brazil?

Answer: Iguazu Falls

Known as Iguazu Falls in Argentina or as Iguaçu Falls in Brazil, these stunning natural wonders are found within a protected rainforest region on the border between South America's two largest countries (and very close to the triple border mark, also on the same river, with Paraguay).

There are over two hundred individual falls along this part of the river, and four fifths of these falls are on the Argentinean side.
2. Found on the Bering Strait, which of these locations is divided by the International Date Line and separates Russia and the United States?

Answer: Diomede Islands

Two small islands in the North Pacific, Little Diomede and Big Diomede, both visible from one another, are separated by about four kilometers and twenty-one hours. Big Diomede, part of Russia, is part of Russia's northernmost region-- the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug-- and it's not typically a permanent settlement (though it was a Cold War base). Little Diomede, part of Alaska, does contain Native settlements, however.
3. What commune, across a lake from Lugano, Switzerland, is located entirely within Swiss borders but belongs to Italy?

Answer: Campione d'Italia

Campione d'Italia is a unique exclave because it's surrounded entirely by the Lugano Prealps, and while it's less than an hour's walk from the rest of Italy, winding Swiss roads force travelers to navigate around the mountains. The town is small and can be seen in its entirety from nearby Monte San Salvatore in the far south of Switzerland. The nearest Italian city is Como.
4. At two hundred and fifty kilometers in length, the 'demilitarized' border between which countries reaches from the Yellow Sea to the Sea of Japan?

Answer: North Korea and South Korea

The DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) of North and South Korea not only stretches two hundred and fifty kilometers across the Korean Peninsula from sea to sea, but it has a four kilometer thickness and is punctuated with very few crossing points/guard posts along its route, one of which is has mainly been used as a joint meeting area for diplomatic deliberations. Due to tensions between the nations over the years, the region was manned by armed soldiers (along the route) starting in 1953.
5. What location found between Panama and Colombia is the only location to create a gap in the Pan-American Highway?

Answer: The Darién Gap

The Darién Gap has long been considered a dangerous place to visit because of a tendency for Colombian Guerilla forces to use the region as a kidnapping ground. In addition to this, the jungles and wetlands in this hundred kilometer-long stretch of Central America are dense, making any construction exceedingly expensive.

It's because of these that the Pan-American Highway, starting in Alaska and reaching the tip of Tierra del Fuego, doesn't go through The Darién Gap. It does, however, contain the border between Central and South America.
6. Niagara Falls rests on the Canadian/American border between Ontario and what U.S. state?

Answer: New York

Found on the Niagara River, Niagara Falls sits between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario and is one of the most famous waterfalls in the world. As such, it's been built up as a bit of a tourist destination. The Horseshoe Falls (on the Canadian side) are the largest while the American falls (exclusively on the U.S. side) are smaller and more broken up. Just downriver, the Rainbow Bridge acts as one of the area's more popular international border crossings.
7. What peak sits on the border between Nepal and Tibet?

Answer: Mount Everest

While many have attributed the world's highest peak to the nation of Nepal, it's a bit erroneous. Yes, the mountain is often tackled from Nepalese base camps, but the peak is cut in half (at its summit), splitting between Nepal and Tibet. Coincidentally, K2 is another disputed border peak, marking a point at which China meets with Pakistan, further west in the Karakoram range.

The third-highest, Kangchenjunga, is on the India/Nepal border.
8. There is no location in the United States where four state borders converge.

Answer: False

Surprise! There's one spot in the U.S. where four states meet at the corners. You can visit Four Corners Monument where Arizona, Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico meet; there's a spot where, theoretically, you could be in all four at once.

If you can believe it, there's a four corner spot in Canada as well. The provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan align with the border between Nunavut and the Northwest Territories. It was established in 1999 when Nunavut was formed.
9. There's a neutral area in Africa marking the border between Morocco and what European nation?

Answer: Spain

Interestingly, Spain has a few exclaves on the African continent though the city of Ceuta, surrounded entirely within the borders of Morocco (and backing onto the Strait of Gibraltar), is probably the most notable. Ceuta's neutral border brings visitors into M'diq-Fnideq Prefecture and while visitors are unlikely to take this route into Africa, they are relatively close to the city of Tangier, a more popular starting point for tourists due to its size and landmarks at the edge of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.
10. Mosi-oa-Tunya, 'The Smoke That Thunders', marks the border between Zimbabwe and what other African nation?

Answer: Zambia

Mosi-oa-Tunya is another name for Victoria Falls located on the Zambezi River as it splits the town of Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe from Livingstone, Zambia. Part of Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Victoria Falls is one of the region's most famous natural wonders and is the longest stretch of uninterrupted waterfalls in the world.

It's double the size of Niagara Falls but has less annual flow.
