Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Found in the beautiful city of Milan, what are/were the navigli?

Answer: Series of canals

The navagali were originally a series of five interconnected canals used for trading and transport purposes. Starting in the 1930s, though, these canals were for the most part covered over as transportation by boat became less economically viable and now only the Naviglio Grande and the Naviglio Pavese remain accessible, with both offering informative boat tours and the canal banks being lined with many restaurants and bars.
2. Which city in Lombardy is well known as the venue for Formula One's Italian grand prix?

Answer: Monza

Monza has hosted the Italian grand prix every year since 1922 apart from 1980, when it was held at Imola. Monza Park, in which the racetrack is situated, is a beautiful walled park covering almost seven square kilometres, of which one third is lush woodland. It is also home to the Golf Club Milano which is a regular host of the Italian Open competition.
3. In which Lombardy city are the old and new parts of the city connected by a funicular railway?

Answer: Bergamo

The Citta Alta, or Upper City, is the older part of Bergamo and is surrounded by defensive Venetian walls, while the lower part, the Citta Basa, is much more modern. There is a height difference between the two parts of the city of 85 metres (279 feet) and the funicular was built in 1887.
4. The Lombardy city of Cremona is famed as the home of several of the greatest luthiers in history. What would a luthier be associated with?

Answer: Stringed instruments

A luthier is someone who builds or repairs string instruments and Cremona has been home to some of the best, including Antonio Stradivari, Giuseppe Guarneri and the Amati family. As a city with such a rich musical heritage, no visit can be complete without attending one of its festivals of Renaissance music.
5. There are many beautiful cities on this lake, but Lecco is especially so, being at the southern end of the Valsassina valley. On which lake does Lecco sit?

Answer: Como

Lecco is an extremely picturesque city with stunning scenery as well as Viscontea Tower within the city in Piazza XX Settembre. The tower is part of the 14th century castle of Lecco and is now a museum and art gallery. Lake Como is the third largest lake in Italy, but surely the most beautiful, as Percy Bysshe Shelley wrote in 1818, "This lake exceeds anything I ever beheld in beauty", although he did finish the quote by saying that the Irish islands of Killarney were more beautiful.
6. The River Mella flows through this city which is also home to the stunning San Salvatore-Santa Giulia monastery complex. Which city is this?

Answer: Brescia

Brescia is the second largest city in Lombardy and is steeped in history and natural beauty. Tempio Capitolino, built in 73 AD in the Piazza del Foro, is a stunning example of Roman architecture with Latin inscriptions and incredible detail still visible on the pillars.
7. Which city in Lombardy is known as the "Garden City" because of its many public parks and the large botanical gardens, on the banks of the lake with the same name as the city?

Answer: Varese

Varese has it all really. Abundant parkland, Varese Lake, wall murals and frescoes, the Marelli Cave, Campo dei Fiori di Varese mountain and the Sacro Monte or Sacred Mountain and its Holy Road, complete with 14 chapels. If it's stunning beauty you're after, visit Varese.

Many of the public parks were formerly gardens commissioned for the mansions of wealthy families and most boast stunning features such as water features, statues and ornamental trees.
8. The Lombardy city of Busto Arsizio was so industrialised by the mid 19th century, it was commonly compared to which city in England?

Answer: Manchester

Ottolini's Cotton Mill in the industrial area of the city was built in 1896 and didn't cease production until 1978, when damaged sections of the mill were reconstructed and became what is now the Museum of Textiles and Industry, showcasing the proud history of the city.

Not only was Busto Arsizio compared to an English city, it is also the headquarters of the Italian Sport Croquet Federation, a very English sport.
9. Monte Isola is a small town found on an island in which Lombardy lake?

Answer: Lake Iseo

Although Monte Isola is classed as a town due to the small size of the island, it is actually a series of 11 villages spread over the 12.8 square kilometres (4.9 square miles). The island is the largest lake island in Central Europe as well as being one of the highest at 600 metres (1,969 feet) above sea level at its highest point.
10. A city once surrounded by 100 watch towers with a prestigious university founded in 1361 and a cathedral with the third largest dome in Italy. Which city in Lombardy would this be?

Answer: Pavia

The medieval towers are still visible and make for an impressive skyline, particularly in Piazza Leonardo da Vinci, while the highly regarded university can boast Nobel Prize winners Camillo Golgi and Carlo Rubbia as well as scientist Alessandro Volta among its alumni. The dome on the Duomo di Pavia is dwarfed only by St. Peter's Basilica and Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence.
