Answer: Oporto

Port wine is actually made upstream in the Douro Valley and is then sent to Oporto where the producers have their wine cellars. In the old days it would come down on boats, but later was transported by truck, just like everything else.
3. Many tourists visit Portugal every year to play what sport?

Answer: Golf

There are not very many native golf players in Portugal, as it is still considered a rich man's sport. There are, however, hundreds of courses because of the visitors and the great weather.

Anglo-Portuguese Alliance is actually considered the oldest alliance in the modern world. The alliance was signed between the two countries on June 13, 1373.
6. What was the Portuguese currency until 2001 when it began using the euro?

Answer: Escudo

One euro was worth 200 escudos at the time of exchange. When there were escudos being used, they even had a 100th of an escudo called a centavo. They also had a name for 1000 ecudos, called a "conto", which was the pseudo-currency for expensive items such as cars or houses.
7. The Portuguese dictatorship was overthrown in the Revolution of the Carnations in what year?

Answer: 1974

The Portuguese dictatorship was overthrown on the 25th of April to be exact. It was a "bloodless" revolution, but led to years of extreme pendulum swings with many governments only lasting a few months.

Answer: Sherry

Sherry is made in Jerez, Spain. The other three drinks are all made in Portugal, with port wine being the best-known by foreigners.
9. What official language is spoken in Portugal?

Answer: Portuguese

Brazilian is a form of Portuguese and Mirandese. Mirandese a dialect from the north of Portugal. I hope none of you said Spanish, as any red-blooded Portuguese would take that as an insult--it is like calling a Scotsman English!
10. Portugal is the world's leading producer of what natural export?

Answer: Cork

Cork is the bark of Cork Oak trees, and the country is full of them. The modern cork industry has suffered from an invasion of plastic stoppers!
