Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Every restaurant you go to in the Keys features conch fritters and conch chowder. What is conch?

Answer: large-type edible shellfish

Conch in its original form is very tough and has to be tenderized to be made edible. In some South American countries, conch is eaten raw in a special cocktail with the conch still squirming around.
2. Key Largo is part of the island chain in the Florida Keys. What do the words Key Largo mean?

Answer: long island

Key Largo is the first island you meet once you leave the Florida mainland. Key Largo is one of the most northern islands of the Florida Keys.
3. The Florida Keys known for what special citrus fruit?

Answer: Key lime

Ah, one of my favourite desserts - Key Lime Pie- even though they don't grow key limes in the Keys any more. These days almost all key limes are grown in other parts of Florida or in South America.
4. If your house address is 89851 Overseas Highway, how far are you from Key West (using the Overseas Highway)?

Answer: 89 miles

House numbers along the Overseas Highway are determined by the distance the address is located from mile marker zero (Key West). The mileage system begins once you leave the mainland using US Route 1.
5. How close is Cuba to Key West, Florida? (in miles)

Answer: 90 miles

The US broke its relationship with Cuba in 1961, and Cuba remains estranged from the US to this day. Many Cubans immigrated to the United States by boat and most of the landing places for them were in The Keys.
6. What did Henry Flagler build in 1912 to revitalize the Florida Keys, especially Key West?

Answer: The Overseas Railroad

The Overseas Railroad was destroyed by a hurricane with 200 mile per hour winds in 1935. As you travel over the new Overseas Highway, you can still see remnants of the old bridge.
7. Which US president was ordered by his doctor to find "somewhere warm to relax and vacation" and chose Key West?

Answer: Harry S. Truman

Key West was the choice for President Truman and his huge entourage. He settled in at the naval station in Key West and returned there ten more times.
8. "The Old Man and the Sea" and "Islands in the Stream" are two books by this famous American writer who called Key West his home. Who was he?

Answer: Ernest Hemingway

Some of his books were based on his experiences in the Keys. You can visit Ernest Hemingway's home in Key West. It is now a museum.
9. Hurricanes and high water surges are a problem in the Keys. What feature do many homes in the keys have?

Answer: many are built on stilts

Many of the houses are built on stilts because of water surges from high winds and hurricanes. The Great Hurricane of 1935 caused water surges of over 18 feet.
10. What two bodies of water surround the Florida Keys?

Answer: The Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean

This is unique because in some places you can walk from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico in just a few minutes. When crossing Seven Mile Bridge you can look north and see the Everglades.
