Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Several places worldwide share this name, including a city in Queensland, Australia. In Florida this is the coast near Miami, where housing prices can be quite high. What coast is this?

Answer: Gold Coast

Surprisingly perhaps, this name for the area only dates to the 1980s, when real estate prices were surging. This stretch of coast was attracting large amounts of gold well before that!
2. Someone always has to be different. The only stretch of Florida coast that doesn't call itself a coast is a single county that shares its name with two of its cities. They just pluralized the name of the more famous city and its famous strand. Can you name this "coast"?

Answer: Palm Beaches

The Palm Beaches have been called that since at least the late 1940s. As famous as Florida is for its beaches, this is the only stretch of coast to directly refer to them in their collective name.
3. The Spanish found a part of the Central Florida coast quite treacherous. In the 1960s the exploits of Kip Wagner and Mel Fisher focused national attention on the area, and inadvertently gave it its sobriquet. What coast is this?

Answer: Treasure Coast

In 1715, a Spanish treasure fleet of eleven ships sank in the area, and interesting things kept washing onto the beaches. The treasure hunting rivalry of the Wagners and Fishers hit paydirt in the 1960s, spawning a couple of museums and innumerable lawsuits. It isn't over either. In 2015 over $4 million in gold coins were recovered off Vero Beach.
4. While many Florida coast names harken to the days of European discovery, one points proudly to its role in 20th Century history. In 1969, I joined over a million other people watching the beginning of the greatest voyage of exploration ever. Which coast was I standing on?

Answer: Space Coast

I was there, at my favorite launch watching spot on the Canaveral Jetty, along with about a million others on beaches, rooftops and roadsides at 9:32 a.m., 16 July 1969, as Apollo Eleven began its journey to the moon. They just HAD to call it the Space Coast.
5. Auto racing, surfing, big game fishing and an assortment of more sedentary activities are available in the Daytona Beach area, as well as proximity to the theme parks just inland. They call the area after what people come to Florida to have. What is this coast called?

Answer: Fun Coast

While likely best known for NASCAR racing, Daytona Beach ('Tona to the beach rats of my youth) has a myriad of possibilities for the visitor, including a beach you can drive on. New Smyrna Beach has had some shark issues, but Shark Coast just wasn't going to happen.
6. Northeast Florida's coast draws its nickname from the fact that St. Augustine is here, along with a stretch of beach now called Mickler's Landing, which might be the spot that Juan Ponce de Leon first set foot in Florida. What is this coast's primary name?

Answer: First Coast

The origins of European influence in eastern North America are here, but much of the history isn't pretty. Although Spain had claimed Florida, an intrepid band of French Huguenots actually set up the first colony. They were massacred for their trouble. The native Timucua people fared a little better, lasting almost three centuries before being eliminated by disease and assimilation.
7. If Pensacola had survived its first hurricane, Florida's westernmost coast might have been the First Coast. Ah, well. Instead, the area draws its name from the gem-clear, brilliantly green waters of the Gulf of Mexico. What coast is this?

Answer: Emerald Coast

In addition to a number of military facilities, the Emerald Coast is home to some of the finest beaches in the world, composed of a brilliantly white sand so fine grained it's locally called "sugar sand".
8. Running from near Apalachicola almost to Tarpon Springs, this coast doesn't look like Florida to many outsiders - few beaches, fewer condominiums, just mangrove forests and salt marshes. It's home to several large ecological set aside areas, and beloved by natives for preserving natural Florida. That's where it draws its name. It is the...

Answer: Nature Coast

Also known as Florida's Big Bend, the area is home to agriculture, forestry, and relatively few people. Floridians of a certain antiquity (like me) prize the area for its slower pace, cleaner air, quiet, and complete lack of pretensions. It's the Florida we grew up in.
9. The burgeoning area around Tampa Bay has sometimes been referred to, rather unkindly, if humorously, as "God's Waiting Room" due to the influx of elderly retirees. The area's promoters went more upbeat. Please don't forget the UV blocker, as you identify this area as the...

Answer: Sun Coast

The Sun Coast has a nice eclectic mix. Fine beaches, good nightlife, an array of cultural influences ranging from Cuban cigar makers to Greek sponge divers. They even annually celebrate their favorite hometown pirate, Jose Gasparilla!
10. The coast south of Tampa Bay has its own unique personality. It draws its nickname from its numerous museums, the artist's colonies that were once common in the area, and other amenities driven by the wealthy who spent part of the year there. As you drive from Henry Ford's winter home to the Ringling Museum, what coast are you on?

Answer: Cultural Coast

There's a bit of a dispute over where the Cultural Coast ends and the Lee Island Coast begins. I've sided with the group that reaches furthest south with the Cultural Coast, on the basis of general ambience.
