Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How did the City of Oshkosh get its name?

Answer: In honor of Chief Oshkosh

Oshkosh (or Os-kosh) was the chief of the Menominee Nation in the mid 1800's. There is no record I can find of why the city was named after him, but his support of the United States in the Black Hawk War of 1832 and his participation of treaty negotiations made him a famous and respected figure in the area.
2. Oshkosh is located on the western side of which lake?

Answer: Lake Winnebago

Lake Winnebago is the largest inland lake in Wisconsin and is a mecca for watersport enthusiasts in the eastern side of the state.
3. What is Oshkosh's nickname?

Answer: Sawdust City

Even though the lake fly season is just plain ugly, the city's nickname comes from its history as the center of the timber industry in Wisconsin in the 1800's. Logs were floated down the Wolf and Fox Rivers to dozens of saw mills in Oshkosh. Manufacturers of furniture, wooden doors, and building materials were the back bone of the early Oshkosh economy.
4. Wisconsin isn't the only state lucky enough to have an Oshkosh. Where else can you find another city named Oshkosh?

Answer: Nebraska

A small city of about 2,000 people, Oshkosh is located near the North Platte River in Western Nebraska. It is known as the Goose Capital of the World. There are also unincorporated townships named Oshkosh in Minnesota, North Dakota, and Louisiana.
5. Oshkosh is home to what famous clothing manufacturer?

Answer: Oshkosh B'Gosh

Even though most of the manufacturing processes have been moved out of the country, Oshkosh B'Gosh still has their corporate offices in Oshkosh. When introducing yourself to someone and mentioning that you are from Oshkosh, the immediate response is always "B'Gosh!".
6. What major transportation manufacturer has its headquarters in Oshkosh?

Answer: Oshkosh Truck

Not as well known Oshkosh B'Gosh, (no one will ever say "Truck!" when you tell them you're from Oshkosh) Oshkosh Truck maintains their manufacturing operations in Oshkosh. Mainly a manufacturer of heavy duty transport trucks for civilian and military applications, they have branches that also make fire trucks, concrete mixers, and airport snow removal equipment
7. Every summer 700,000 people attend this event in Oshkosh.

Answer: EAA AirVenture Oshkosh

Also known as the Experimental Aircraft Association Convention and Fly-In, and the Oshkosh Airshow, it is billed as "The World's Greatest Aviation Celebration". Pilots and airplane enthusiasts from over 100 countries come to Oshkosh for this event. Over 10,000 private airplanes fly into the Oshkosh and surrounding airports for a week every summer, making the Oshkosh Wittman Field control tower the busiest in the world during the event. Hundreds of vintage WW II aircraft fly in the airshow.
8. Oshkosh hosts one of the largest annual Country Music Festivals in the United States. What is it called?

Answer: Country U.S.A.

Held in a farmer's field (now that's Country!) this five day festival attracts more than 150,000 Country Music fans. Headliners in 2007 included Alan Jackson, Carrie Underwood, Trace Adkins, and Sawyer Brown.
9. One of the largest Christian Music Festivals in the country comes to Oshkosh every summer, it is called?

Answer: Lifest

LifeFest! 30,000 people attend this five day festival of Christian Music and family oriented events.
10. During the 70s, Oshkosh became well known for its St. Patrick's Day celebrations. Who coined the phrase "There are only two places to be on St. Patrick's Day, Dublin Ireland and Oshkosh Wisconsin"?

Answer: Johnny Carson

Over-exuberant celebrations surrounding St. Patrick's Day during the 70's brought unwanted attention to Oshkosh. Johnny Carson made the comment during one of his monologues after an especially riotous night of partying that made the network news. The local University solved the problem by scheduling Spring Break to include March 17th.
