Anthropologists and archeologists estimate that the first Australians arrived around 50,000 years ago.
2. The British were not the first Europeans to have contact with Western Australia. What nationality were the first explorers?

Answer: Dutch

In 1616 Dirk Hartog, a Dutch explorer, sailed the west coast of the continent and landed north of Shark Bay. Hartog left a pewter plate which is now on display in a Dutch museum.
The first undisputed sighting of Australia by a European was made in early 1606 on the east coast of the continent by another Dutch vessel, Duyfken, captained by Willem Janszoon. He landed on the west coast of Cape York peninsula.
3. Where and when was the first permanent British settlement in Western Australia?

Answer: King George Sound, 1827

King George Sound (now Albany) was settled by a military detachment sent to prevent French settlement. Settlement at Swan River did not take place till two years later.

Almost 10,000 convicts were sent to Western Australia between 1850 and 1868, when transportation ceased. The convicts were guarded by ex British Army soldiers known as Enrolled Pensioner Guards. Many government and public buildings in Perth were built with convict labour.

Edith Cowan was elected to the Western Australian parliament and served there until 1924. She is commemorated in Western Australian history by having a university named after her. Dame Enid Lyons and Dorothy Tangney were the first women elected to Federal parliament - in 1943. Carol Martin was the first indigenous woman elected to any Australian parliament.

Answer: HMAS Sydney

The HMAS Sydney was sunk by the German raider Kormoran in the Indian Ocean on 19th November 1941, with the loss of all 645 people on board.

Answer: Carmen Lawrence

Carmen went on to be elected to the Federal Parliament in 1994, and later became the first woman president of the Australian Labour Party. She retired from politics in 2007.
