Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The biography of Ahmose son of Abana begins 'the Crew Commander Ahmose son of Abana, the justified'. What does the term justified in an inscription mean about a person?

Answer: Died and been judged worthy by the gods of the afterlife.

The judgement consisted of the so-called 'negative confessions' - 400 statements of things you had not done such as 'O bone-breaker who comes from Heracleopolis, I have not told lies'. The heart being weighed against the feather of truth to see if they had lied. People who could afford it had spells to bias the judgement and it also seems Anubis would fiddle the scales to help a bit as well.
Justified is sometimes also translated as 'true of voice'.
2. Which of these was *not* name of a ship he served on?

Answer: Hapy aids me (Hapy is the hermaphrodite goddess or god of the Nile)

The biography also implies he commanded the kings ship the Falcon in a campaign in Nubia - "His majesty journeyed north, all foreign lands in his grasp, with that wretched Nubian Bowman head downward at the bow of his majesty's ship the Falcon."
3. Ahmose says 'I have been rewarded with gold seven times in the sight of the whole land'. He does not say what form this gold was but later in the new kingdom it was a gold model of an animal. Which animal?

Answer: fly

Flies may have been awarded earlier as fly amulets were being worn from pre dynastic times. It is thought that the fly came to represent courage because of its persistent attacks on much larger creatures.
4. What is the quite surprising statement Ahmose makes a few lines into his biography?

Answer: He gives the name of his father

The Egyptians said that you can never be sure who your father was but you are certain about your mother. His father Baba served Seqenenre Tao II who began the expulsion of the Hyksos from Egypt.
In one of his earlier exploits he captured an enemy and says "I went down into the water - for he was captured on the city side - and crossed the water carrying him" so presumably he was a strong swimmer.
5. In his biography Ahmose boasts of how he brought the king back from Nubia in two days. How does he say he passed the first cataract?

Answer: He did not say

There was a canal round the cataract but stones frequently blocked it. The first canal was constructed under Pepi I (6th Dynasty, 2289-2255BC). Senusret III (twelfth dynasty, 1878-1841BC) ordered the excavation of a 75 metre long ('Length of this canal, 150 cubits; width, 20; depth, 15') canal at the first cataract that had to be repaired eight years later.

In year three of Thutmose I (18th dynasty, 1501BC) the canal was full of stones so that no ship could use it. A generation later, Thutmose III had to deal with the problem again. In another part of his biography he says 'I was brave in his presence in the bad water, in the towing of the ship over the cataract' but he does not say which cataract.
6. The name Ibana is also given as Abana, Ebana and Abina in other translations. Why is there this confusion?

Answer: Egyptian was a Semitic language and has no signs for vowels

Although you will see hieroglyphic alphabets with the vowel signs shown they are not really vowels (semi vowels or weak consonants to be technical).
Many hieroglyphs represent groups of consonants and others are determinatives. A determinative is a sign used to make the meaning of a word clear. It is often a picture of the thing itself but 'fight' is a pair of arms with a shield and weapon and an abstract idea is shown by a roll of papyrus.
7. He is buried at El-Kab (originally Nekheb) just up stream from Esna. What is the major site near his tomb?

Answer: The city walls with the temple of the goddess Nekhbet inside.

The walls mud brick are still high and measure 550m square. Nekhbet is the vulture goddess who symbolises Upper Egypt. The temple is much dilapidated. Most of what does survive dates from the 25th to 30th dynasties - including the Persian Darius I (770-343 BC) but a pylon of Ramesses II survives and much work was done in the middle kingdom.

A granite block with the name of Khasekhemwy (second dynasty c 2700 BC) has been found.
8. In addition to the gold what rewards was he given?

Answer: Land and slaves

Slavery in ancient Egypt is a problem; some scholars even claim it did not exist. There was nothing like the situation in Roman latifundas or early 19th century USA which we tend to think of when we talk of slavery. Most Egyptians seem to be bound to hereditary jobs so could be considered serfs and it seems everyone had some rights. Most slaves seem to be prisoners of war (although not necessarily combatants) but it is known for people to be enslaved for debt.
People did boast of being given funerary equipment by the king.
9. How many enemies did say he killed?

Answer: None but he says several times that he 'made a seizure and carried off a hand' which implies he killed at least eight men

Egyptian soldiers showed they had defeated an enemy by bringing in his hand or genitals. It is not clear how it was decided what part to bring in.
Some people claim the Egyptians took genitals from enemies who were circumcised like they were and hands from the uncircumcised. However other experts claim that no circumcised mummies have been found and the often seen illustration that is supposed to show circumcision might just be shaving pubic hair or that circumcision was restricted to priests who had especially high requirements for cleanliness.
10. What other military feat does he boast of?

Answer: Capturing an enemy chariot

He was also involved in land campaigns. During a campaign in Naharin (Mitanni) he says 'I brought a chariot, its horse, and him who was on it as a living captive'. During a campaign in Naharin Ahmose Pen-nekhbet in the reign of Thutmosis II also captured a chariot and one horse when fighting against Naharin, which is strange as most chariots of this period seem to have had two horses (and two crew or three for the Hittites).
He seems to have been given 20 captives. The part where he says how much land he was given is damaged but he got 16 hectares in one place.
