The Incas at one time believed that they had conquered the whole world. They called their empire the "Four Quarters of the World." At its peak, the empire covered an area 4,800 km long and 960 km wide.
2. Ur, Nippur, Kish.

Answer: Mesopotamia

"Mesopotamia" is from the Greek and means "between the rivers." As this region between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers held the earliest known civilization, it has been called "the cradle of civilization".
3. Syracuse, Carthago, Londinium.

Answer: Rome

According to legend, Rome was founded in about 753 B.C. by two brothers, Romulus and Remus. They were the twin sons of Mars, the god of war, and a Latin princess. Circumstances left them abandoned on the banks of the Tiber River and they were first raised by a wolf and later a shepherd.

As adults, they determined to build a great city along the Tiber, but had a fight over who would rule the city. Romulus killed his brother Remus and became the ruler of the city that bears his name.
4. Bodh Gaya, Pataliputra, Taxila.

The Mauryan Empire (present day India) began with the reign of Chandragupta Maurya, as he united much of the land. Although he only reigned until 301 B.C., the empire lasted from 326 to 184 B.C.

Answer: Egypt

The Ancient Egyptian civilization lasted for approximately 2800 years, beginning around 3100 B.C. when King Menes united the two lands of Upper and Lower Egypt, and ending in 332 B.C. when Alexander the Great conquered the region.

Answer: Aztec

According to legend, the Aztec capital city, Tenochtitlan, was built where it was because their war god Huitzilopochtli told the Aztecs to watch out for an eagle sitting on a cactus eating a snake, and that would be the location for the city.
7. Wuxi, Suzhou, Chang'an.

Answer: China

Ancient China was first united in 221 B.C. under Prince Zheng of Qin. He called himself "Shi Huangdi" which translates as "first august sovereign."
8. Gordium, Melos, Epidaurus.

Answer: Greece

Greece is known as the "Cradle of Western Civilization" due to its immense influence on the western world. Our systems of government, philosophy, and even our alphabet are rooted in Ancient Greece.
9. Kumbi Saleh, El-Ghaba, Aoudaghast.

Answer: Ghana

The ancient kingdom of Ghana was actually about 200 miles northwest of where the present-day country of Ghana exists.
10. Tikal, Tulum, Palenque.

Answer: Maya

The Mayan Civilization was at its peak between A.D. 300 and A.D. 900. For the Maya, money really did grow on trees, as cacao beans were commonly used as a form of payment in bartering and trade.
