1. What was the Chieftain's main tank opponent during the Cold War?

Answer: T72

The T72 was the main MBT of the Warsaw Pact forces facing NATO although other versions such as the T54 and T62 were still around in smaller numbers.
2. What was the first war that the Chieftain MBT saw action in?

Answer: The Iran-Iraq War 1980

Approx 875 Chieftain MBTs were supplied to Iran before the Islamic Republic of Iran was formed; thereafter all supplies were stopped.
3. What type of heater was fitted to keep the crew warm in winter conditions?

Answer: None

Apart from a few trial versions of heaters the Chieftain was a very cold tank in winter. Crew heated suits were also tried but found to be unworkable.
4. What type of radio was fitted to the Chieftain after the Larkspur system was replaced?

Answer: Clansman

Even as the Clansman system was being fitted to the Chieftain a new system was on the drawing board to be introduced in the early 2000s.

In use with the British Army from 1953 until 1988.

The Chieftain had a main engine (the L60) and a GUE Generator Unit Engine to provide power for the running of the gun equipment and auxilliary equipment.

Changing gear in a Chieftain did tend to make the tank buck due to the hydraulic gear change system.

Answer: APDS-HESH.

APDS is armour piercing discarding sabot. HESH is high explosive squash head.

Answer: ARV

The ARV (Armoured Recovery Vehicle) had tremendous pulling power to recover tanks from almost any place they ended up in.
