Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Samuel de Champlain founded the first colony at Quebec and was instrumental in its organization and growth. He also served in other outposts, and was responsible for building the harbour in what city?

Answer: Havana

Probably one of the reasons Champlain spent so much time outside France was that he was a Huguenot.
2. In the early days of the colony the population was almost exclusively male. In an effort to keep everyone happy and build the colony, young women were sent from France to marry the colonists. What were they called?

Answer: The daughters of the king

There is evidence that indicates that many of these young women were taken from prisons, and were thieves and prostitutes.
3. Paul de Chomedy, Sieur de Maisonneuve, founded a settlement at Ville Marie in 1642. What is it known as today?

Answer: Montreal

Mount Royal (Royal Mountain), was the name of the hill on the island Ville Marie was located on, from which Montreal got its present name.
4. A pious young Frenchwoman accompanied de Maisonneuve and in 1642 she founded the first hospital, Hotel Dieu, in Ville Marie. Who was she?

Answer: Jeanne Mance

Hotel Dieu still remains a major hospital in Montreal.
5. Robert Cavalier, Sieur de La Salle, was a great explorer and fur trader. He followed Marquette and Joliette through the great lakes and down the Mississippi. Back home in New France, people called his estate Lachine (China). Why?

Answer: He was convinced he could find a route to China

Everyone assumed that was the only China he was ever going to see. He was reputedly mad, and was murdered by mutineers in Texas in 1687.
6. Pierre Esprit de Radisson and Medard Chouart Sieur de Groseilliers, were great fur traders and explorers. On whose side did they fight in the French and Indian wars?

Answer: With the British

Radisson and Grosseilliers wrangled with the French over fur-trading rights and ended up working with the English. They were founding members of the Hudson's Bay Company in 1670, and Radisson died in London.
7. What did Madeline de Vercheres do when she was only 14 years old?

Answer: She almost single-handedly held off a party of Iroquois for a number of days

Madeline, her two younger brothers and an old servant held off the Iroquois in her parent's small fort for about a week. For exactly how long she did this and exactly how many Iroquois she held off is now the stuff of legend.
8. Mere Marie de l'Incarnation brought a religious order to Quebec in 1640 that would play an instrumental role in educating the colony. What order was this?

Answer: The Ursulines

Mere Marie was a sticker for records, which means that much of the information we have about everyday life in the early days of New France comes from the Ursulines. She was also a great letter-writer.
9. Adam Dollard Sieur des Ormeaux died with 19 of his friends in a small, makeshift fort on the Ottawa River. They were all killed during a pitched battle with an Iroquois war party. Why?

Answer: They ran into a group of Iroquois

Evidence would indicate that Dollard and his friends were not out to save the colony. They wanted to steal furs that the Hurons, allies of the French, were bringing down the Ottawa river. Unfortunately, they ran into the Iroquois (allies of the British) first.
10. The Marquis de Montcalm was sent to command the garrison at Quebec after serving in the War of the Austrian Succession. He died in 1759 after a decisive battle with whom?

Answer: The British

The standard line is that he was outwitted by the British general James Wolfe, but his big problem was that the king of France wasn't interested in Quebec and sold him down the river.
