It was last printed in Ottawa, in April 1989. The $1 coin, known as the 'loonie', had already been in circulation for two years, starting in 1987. The $2 bill was last printed in 1996, the same year that the $2 coin, the 'toonie', was introduced.
2. The first ever long-distance call was made by Alexander Graham Bell in what year?

Answer: 1876

On August 3, 1876 Bell made the call to Mount Pleasant, a town 15 km SW of Brantford, Ontario. A week later, Bell made another call to Paris, Ontario about the same distance away, but NW of Brantford.

Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone, was a Canadian who taught at Boston University but his home was in Brantford, Ontario.

There were locks and canals in certain places along the route prior to this, but now it was up to the standards needed for ocean going vessels. Along the St. Lawrence River between Cornwall and Montreal, ten villages had to be moved because the new river course, with locks and canals, would flood the area.

The Welland Canal section was first opened in 1829 and has been upgraded four times over its history, the last time in 1973.

The Calgary Exhibition began in 1886 and the first Stampede was held in 1912. The two were combined in 1923 to make it was it is today. In 2006, over 1.2 million people attended the 10 day event which is held in July. The Stampede now includes an exhibition, midway, festival and rodeo.

Originally, it was the first permanent fair in Canada, evolving from the agricultural fairs that moved to a different city each year. It was established and named the Toronto Industrial Exhibition in 1879. By 1904, it was informally called the Canadian National Exhibition and in 1912, this name was made official. Now known as "THE EX" to people in Ontario, it begins in mid-August and always closes on Labour Day in September.
10. In what year did a nuclear-powered Soviet satellite crash in the Northwest Territories?

Answer: 1978

On January 24, 1978, Cosmos 954, the Soviet spy satellite with an on board nuclear reactor, crashed in the Northwest Territories of Canada. At that time, it alerted people to the dangers of sending nuclear reactors into space. Only a small portion of the wreckage was recovered and Canada billed the Soviets for damages totalling over $6 million. They received only half of this amount.
