Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why did the Protestant Reformation take place?

Answer: It was the result of objections to Catholic doctrine and practices

Martin Luther objected because in his view Catholic doctrine had abandoned the original teachings of the Bible. He also objected to a range of practices within the Catholic Church. His original aim was to reform the Church, and he and his followers only broke away when it became clear that the Papacy was unwilling to make fundamental changes.
2. What is generally regarded as the main reason for some people fleeing from England, especially to the American colonies, in the period c. 1620-45?

Answer: Religious persecution

Parts of America had already been explored and the Puritans felt persecuted by the Established Church in England at the time, so they sailed to America and established colonies.
3. What man is credited with being the 'George Washington of South America'?

Answer: Simon Bolivar

The country of Bolivia is named after him.
4. What battle marked the end of Napoleon Bonaparte's military and political career?

Answer: Battle of Waterloo

The Battle of Waterloo was Napoleon's last and he was defeated. He was exiled to St. Helena and died there a few years later.

Answer: Prince Albert

The exhibition was housed in the Crystal Palace, made of glass and iron.
9. Which of the following happened to Germany after World War One?

Answer: Germany had to pay several billion dollars in reparations

Exploiting the widely held view that Germany had started WWI the Treaty of Versailles forced Germany to pay reparations for damage caused during the war, though there is much debate about how much Germany actually paid. In addition, Germany lost territory and the size of its armed forces was severely restricted.
10. Who was the U.S. president during World War Two?

Answer: Franklin D. Roosevelt

Despite his efforts, FDR's 'New Deal' didn't take the U.S. out of the Depression.
