Answer: Corsica

Of course it was Corsica! Corsica had just been purchased by France from the then bankrupt Genoa the previous year - in 1768.
2. By the end of his life, which military rank had Napoleon risen to?

Answer: General

He was appointed second lieutenant at the age of 16 and became a general after he reclaimed the French city of Toulon.
3. Before his death, Napoleon asked for his heart to be removed. But who did he wish for it to be sent to?

Answer: Marie Louise

Marie Louise was his wife and Josephine, his ex-wife. This request was never carried out, however.
4. At what age did Napoleon become a lieutenant?

Answer: 16

He was appointed to this position on September 1st, 1785.
5. What was the original spelling of "Bonaparte"?

Answer: Buonaparte

This was an Italian name, and Napoleon changed it to Bonaparte as he thought it was more French sounding.

Napoleon was born in Corsica, and was exiled to both Elba and St Helena. He was to escape from Elba to return to France but died on St Helena.

His first wife was named Josephine, his second Marie Louise. He was previously engaged to Désirée Clary, but broke off the engagement. Napoleon married Josephine at the age of 26, but later divorced her on the grounds that she was unable to give him an heir. Both were also known to have had affairs during the marriage. Napoleon married Marie Louise in 1810 and they had a son, also called Napoleon, who (nominally) became Napoleon II.

Answer: Eight

His siblings were:
- Joseph, later King of Naples and Spain.
- Lucien.
- Maria-Anna Elisa, later Grand Duchess of Tuscany.
- Louis, who married Napoleon's step-daughter Hortense.
- Maria Paola, married to a French general and later to Prince Borghese.
- Maria Annunziata Caroline.
- Jérôme, later King of Westphalia. The only remaining descendants are descended from Jérôme.
9. When did Napoleon die?

Answer: 5 May 1821

A simple date, but undoubtedly significant. The cause of Napoleon's death has been much debated, even today.
10. What name is given to the period after Napoleon's escape from exile?

Answer: The Hundred Days

This was the period between his escape and the Battle of Waterloo, after which he was again exiled, this time to St Helena.
