Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the height of its power and influence in the 4th and 5th centuries B.C.E., roughly how many hoplites (full citizen-soldiers) could the Spartan army field at any given time?

Answer: 8,000

The total number of military personnel that Sparta could bring to bear was considerably larger (closer to 20,000) due to the second and third classes of Spartan people that were part of the army and used as light infantry and in other auxiliary roles on the battlefield.
2. A Spartan's life depended on his shield. It was primarily used for defense but in the hands of a skilled Spartan hoplite it was also a fearsome and effective offensive weapon given the right situation. What was this shield called?

Answer: Aspis

The xiphos was a type of sword carried by hoplites. A peltast was a light skirmisher that was part of most Spartan military forces. The sarissa was the standard spear carried by soldiers in a the Macedonian phalanx used by Phillip II, Alexander the Great, and their successors.
3. The shield and spear were the two most important pieces of equipment for a Spartan hoplite. What was this spear called?

Answer: Doru

The Aspis was the shield that Spartans carried. The phalanx is the formation that the heavy Spartan infantry fought in. The Chiton was the name for the tunics the hoplites wore.
4. The Spartan soldier (hoplite) looked similar to the hoplites of other Greek city-states with the exception of their cloak and long hair. What was the color associated with the Spartan hoplite's cloak? (Their tunics were the same color).

Answer: Crimson

The crimson cloak and tunic of the Spartan hoplite were a distinctive feature and made Spartan forces stand out on the battlefield. Spartans also wore their hair very long, a common practice among free Greeks during the archaic period but long abandoned by all except the Spartans and Spartan sympathizers. They weren't afraid of drawing attention to themselves, it seems!
5. The Spartans decorated their shield with this Greek letter. What was the symbol on the shield of all Spartan hoplites?

Answer: Lambda (Ë)

The letter lambda represented Laconia or Lacedaemon, the region of Greece where Sparta was located. The ancient Spartans referred to themselves as Lacedaemonians.
6. A well-known movie depicts Spartans wearing very little in terms of protection with only a shield, helmet, and greaves. What essential piece of armor did the movie omit that was likely part of the basic armor setup for Greek Hoplites of this time period?

Answer: Bronze cuirass

The bronze cuirass was the standard body armor for the Spartan hoplite during the Persian wars and their famous last stand at Thermopylae. The Spartan hoplite was considered 'heavy infantry'. Their heavy armor gave them and other Greeks a distinct advantage over the lighter armored Persian troops in close combat.
7. Spartan youths were taken from their families to begin military training at age seven. The Spartans called this school the Agoge. Boys were relentlessly trained to fight and endure severe hardship to prepare them for military life as an adult. At what age did Spartan men assume their role as a full member of the military?

Answer: 20

Graduates of the Agoge were full members of the military at age twenty. They were made reserve members of the military at age eighteen while they continued training in various capacities. At age thirty, considered their prime, they retired from active military life and were accorded full citizen status with voting rights and allowed to marry.
8. Spartans retired from active military service at the age of thirty. However, they remained a part of the active military reserve until what age?

Answer: 60

Spartan citizens could be called to serve until age sixty. However, in times of crisis that they could be called up to serve until age sixty-five.
9. Some say they were outfought. Some say they were outmaneuvered. Still other accounts claim their famous refusal to retreat was their downfall when an orderly withdrawal might have saved the day. Regardless, the Spartan army was soundly defeated and their ability to project their power throughout Greece was crippled after this battle. What was the Greek city-state was victorious over Sparta on that day in 371 BC?

Answer: Thebes

Corinth was at times friend and foe to Sparta. Argos and Athens and were long-time rivals and usually at odds with Sparta. It was Thebes however, that dealt the blow that signaled the decline of Spartan power at the Battle of Leuctra on July 6, 371 BC.

The Thebians and their allies, despite inferior numbers, employed some non-traditional tactics to overwhelm the Spartans and hand them a resounding defeat. Sparta suffered devastating losses that she was never able to fully recover from. Sparta limped along as a regional power for another couple hundred years but her best days were behind her.
10. When Phillip II and his son Alexander were conquering Greece they eventually overcame all resistance from the city-states and brought most Greeks into the Macedonian empire. All except the Spartans. Although an invasion of Sparta was never attempted by Phillip II or Alexander, legend has it that when Philip II sent a message to Sparta saying "If I enter Laconia, I will raze Sparta," the Spartans replied with one word. What was that word?

Answer: If

While this account is unverifiable, Sparta's defiance was well documented. Although not militarily powerful enough to resist the full might of the Macedonian army, Phillip or Alexander never attempted the conquest. One might venture a guess that the cost would not be worth effort. Animosity continued well after.

When invited by Alexander to take part in campaign against the Persian Empire, Sparta refused saying they "do not follow men, but lead them." After conquering Persia, Alexander the Great sent hundreds of suits of Persian armor to Athens as trophies of war.

The message sent along with the suits said, "Alexander, son of Philip, and all the Greeks except the Spartans, give these offerings taken from the foreigners who live in Asia."
