This bitter battle was fought on a very hot, steamy Missouri summer's day, on the 10th of August 1861.
2. Who was the Federal Commander who ordered the retreat of the Union Army?

Answer: Samuel Sturgis

Major-General Samuel D. Sturgis took command of the Union forces after the death of Brigadier-General Nathaniel Lyon earlier in the day. On Bloody Hill, he realized his force was nearly exhausted of ammunition so he gave the order to retreat, leaving the battle-field in the hands of the Southern Army.

General Lyon had ordered a surprise attack on the Confederate position early in the morning of August 10, 1861. This surprise attack was briefly beneficial. The Southerners were able to rise quickly and amounted a counter-charge. From then on, the battle was nothing more than charges and counter-charges.

For more than four hours, the battle raged back and forth on this hill ... leaving tremendous wounded and dead for both sides. The most notable loss on this Hill was the death of General Nathaniel Lyon. If you go to the National Park to this day, walk the trail and you will come across the spot where Lyon fell, as well as a long, hastily dug, shallow mass grave of the Union dead.

The Confederate batteries greatly helped to ease the pressure being put on the rest of the Confederate army. They hit the advancing Union army with deadly precision that caused many men to hold up on their advance and run for shelter. This time helped the rest of the Confederate army to regroup and to counter-charge. No matter where the Union army was, they were being fired upon from every direction.
