Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This plane claimed four Japanese aircraft carriers at the battle of Midway.

Answer: Douglas SBD Dauntless

Three squadrons of SBD Dauntless dive bombers put three enemy carriers out of action on their first strike. Later the same day the fourth and last carrier was left burning by these dive bombers.
2. This unsung hero of the Battle of Britain had more victories than any other plane in the battle.

Answer: Hawker Hurricane

While the Supermarine Spitfire got all the glory for fighter versus fighter kills, the Hurricanes concentrated on Luftwaffe bombers. Hurricanes had more kills on the larger, harder to replace bombers.
3. A fast, agile fighter with incredible range. It was unmatched in the Pacific early in the war.

Answer: Mitsubishi A6M Zero

The "Zeke" had a weakness. It lacked self-sealing fuel tanks and was vulnerable to fuel fires from battle damage. Allied fliers attacked head on against the Zero to minimize its speed and agility advantages.
4. The most produced fighter aircraft in history, the Luftwaffe used it throughout the war.

Answer: Messerschmitt Bf 109

Nearly 34,000 Bf 109s were built. They had great success against the U.S. Eighth Air Force bombers outside of escort fighter range.
5. Introduced late in the war, this Soviet fighter was small and light. Its performance was comparable to the best Allied fighters.

Answer: Yakovlev Yak-3

Ranked with the Spitfire and Mustang, its late introduction put it up against a weaker Luftwaffe than faced by the early arriving fighters.
6. The first Luftwaffe jet fighter in regular service.

Answer: Messerschmitt Me 262

The 262 was much faster than its opponents. New tactics had to be used by its pilots in order to get accurate shots at enemy fighters and bombers.
7. This plane launched from the USS Hornet and conducted Doolittle's "Tokyo Raid".

Answer: North American B-25 Mitchell

16 twin-engine Mitchell U.S. Army Air Force bombers were launched from the deck of USS Hornet. This attack did minimal damage, but raised morale for Japan's opponents.
8. Royal Air Force heavy bomber, used primarily for night raids against Axis targets.

Answer: Avro Lancaster

In addition to standard strategic targets, Lancasters also delivered "bouncing bombs" against dams and huge bombs meant to destroy Kriegsmarine U-boat pens.
9. This twin engine fighter shot down Admiral Yamamoto's plane. He was found dead in the wreckage.

Answer: Lockheed P-38 Lightning

The Lightning was used in both Europe and the Pacific. It had much more success in the Pacific theatre.
10. This carrier based dive bomber was called the "Val".

Answer: Aichi D3A

Vals destroyed more allied shipping than any other plane in the war. Their design was considered obsolete, especially their non-retractable landing gear.
