Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What company originated the Twix candy bar?

Answer: Mars, Incorporated

The Twix Bar actually originated with a branch of Mars in the United Kingdom in 1967 and was known as "the Raider". It made its way to the United States by 1979 and in 1991 Mars changed the name, calling it "Twix" - a shortened form of "twin biscuit sticks".
2. What company originated the Baby Ruth candy bar?

Answer: Curtiss Candy Company out of Chicago

This candy bar was originally developed by the Curtis Candy Company in Chicago. In 1921 they held a contest to rename it and an employee came up with the name "Baby Ruth" after the daughter of president Grover Cleveland, and so it remains to this day. I suppose the popularity of Babe Ruth at the time didn't hurt it at all.

After a series of purchases and mergers, the Baby Ruth candy bar started to be manufactured by Ferrero spA.
3. What company originated the Mounds candy bar?

Answer: Peter Paul Candy Manufacturing Company

The Mounds candy bar was originally developed by Vincent Nitido in 1920. A single piece sold for five cents. In 1929 the Peter Paul Candy Manufacturing Company purchased the rights to it and production began. Peter Paul merged with Cadbury in 1978 and Hershey Foods purchased their U.S. operations in 1988.

The twin to Mounds is Almond Joy. The only difference is that Mounds uses dark chocolate and Almond Joy uses milk chocolate and adds an almond to each of the two pieces. The jingle says: "Sometimes you feel like a nut / Sometimes you don't / Almond Joy has nuts / Mounds don't."
4. What company originated the Clark Bar candy bar?

Answer: The Clark Company

The Clark bar was developed by Irish immigrant David Clark in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania and was manufactured by his Clark Company starting in 1911, until 1955. After that the Clark Company and its bar was bought and sold several times, ending up with the company that made Necco wafers. For some reason, the owners unexpectedly shut down the Clark Bar plant in Pittsburgh and discontinued the Clark Bar.

But in 2019 The Boyer Candy Company (my hero, sigh!) bought the candy bar rights and re-released it.
5. What company originated the Mr. Goodbar candy bar?

Answer: Hershey

Mr. Goodbars have been made by Hershey since 1908, but not under that name. Initially, Mr. Hershey did not want his name associated with a candy bar that contained peanuts, so he insisted that the wrapper claim that it was manufactured by a fictitious company called the "Chocolate Sales Corporation".

But in 1925 Hershey finally admitted their parentage of their wayward child. It is said that Mr. Hershey was hard of hearing and when one of his executives told him "That's a good bar, Mister", he interpreted it as him calling the new bar "Mr. Goodbar", so that's what they called it.
6. What company originated the Three Musketeers candy bar?

Answer: Mars, Incorporated

When the Three Musketeers candy bar was introduced in 1932, it had three pieces per packages; one chocolate, one vanilla and one strawberry. That was the reason for the name - three musketeers, three flavors. Restrictions caused by World War II led to the phase-out of the vanilla and strawberry parts and the more popular chocolate flavor remained.
7. What company originated the Mallo Cup candy bar?

Answer: Boyer Candy Company

The Boyer Candy Company began during the depression as a part-time kitchen operation by Bill and Bob Boyer. They made and packaged fudge and raisin nut clusters in their kitchen and sold them door-to-door. It has grown some since then. They were the ones who originated the concept of making "cup" candy, despite what the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup salesman may tell you.
8. What company originated the Goo Goo Cluster candy bar?

Answer: Standard Candy Company

The Goo Goo Cluster is another old-timer, dating back over a hundred years to 1912, the year the Titanic sank. It was the world's first combination candy bar, which meant it was made of more than one principal ingredient. It was developed by the Standard Candy Company in Nashville, Tennessee. One of the theories for the origin of the name is that it derives from the initials of the Grand Ole Opry.
9. What company originated the Butterfinger candy bar?

Answer: Curtiss Candy Company out of Chicago

The Butterfinger candy was developed by Otto Schnering in 1923. Otto had founded the Curtis (or Curtiss) Candy Company in Chicago, Illinois in 1922. They are the same people who developed the Baby Ruth candy bar. It was promoted by dropping them out of airplanes over major cities.

After a series of purchases and mergers, the Butterfinger candy bar began to be manufactured by Ferrero spA.
10. What company originated the Snickers candy bar?

Answer: Mars, Incorporated

The Snickers bar was introduced by the Mars company in 1930. The story is that it was named after the one of the favorite horses of the Mars family. Whatever the source of the name, it has become one of the most popular candy bars in the U.S., pulling in over $2 billion in sales per year. If you're watching your waistline, Snickers bars contain around 130 calories, or about ten minutes of jogging per ounce.
