Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Nelson's blood" is a sailor's term for which type of liquor?

Answer: Rum

After he was killed at the Battle of Trafalagar in 1805, Horatio Nelson's body was allegedly placed in a vat of rum to preserve it on its way back to England for a state funeral. Thirsty sailors are said to have tapped the rum, which was tinged with the admiral's blood, and drank it.

This is however untrue - the actual liquid used in preserving Admiral Nelson's body was brandy. The British Navy issued a rum ration to its sailors until 1970.

3. What food is this: Deep fried, coated in a rich sauce and named after the city where it was invented? The city itself is named after an animal.

Answer: Buffalo Wings

First the wrong answers: Turkey is a city in Texas but Turkey Treats are fictional; there is an Otter Tail County in Minnesota but eating anything from an otter is unlikely to be popular; there also is a Rabbit Hash town in Kentucky but Rabbit Hash as a food has limited appeal. "Buffalo wings" appears to be an oxymoron until one realizes that these are deep fried chicken wings coated in butter sauce. I had my first plate of Buffalo wings when visiting Buffalo and I have not had any as good since.

4. Which of these is the largest edible fruit with origin in North America, sometimes called an Ozark banana? Ask your dad.

Answer: Pawpaw

The pawpaw fruit of many names such as Ozark or Kentucky banana, is "native" to North America, meaning over many centuries the plant evolved within a specific region--its ecological niche. Early Native Americans enjoyed this delicious fruit, called assimin. Likely it was the Spanish who changed the name to papaw, having confused it with the papaya they already knew. "Asimina triloba" makes good pie, bread, ice cream and even beer.

It tastes like a mango/banana combination. Strawberries are also native, but small, and indigenous to Europe and many other places as well as North America.

5. Which of the following games can be played with more than two people (using standard equipment and rules)?

Answer: Cribbage

Cribbage can be played by more than two people. You can play with four people directly against one another, or two teams of two people. Three people can play against each other. There is also a way to play two against one. The pegging and counting stay the same for most variations.

The main difference is how many cards are dealt and how cards are distributed to the crib.

6. A lamington is a cake covered in coconut and chocolate. In which country are you most likely to be offered one?

Answer: Australia

The lamington is a popular Australian cake, thought to be named after either Lord Lamington, a former governor of Queensland, or his wife. Usually covered in chocolate and coconut, it sometimes is filled with jam as well. It is said to have originated when the Lamingtons' chef had to prepare a dessert for guests at short notice, and got the idea of cutting up a sponge cake, dipping it in melted chocolate and rolling it in coconut.
