Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This burger comes from Northeast Mississippi and is made of a beef/pork patty with a cheap extender (used to make the burger bigger), all of which is deep-fried in oil. What is the name of this burger?

Answer: Slugburger

The slugburger is made of a mixture of beef, pork, and an extender such as soybeans (although originally, potatoes were used). It is then deep-fried and served in a bun with mustard, pickles and onions.

It was born in Corinth, Mississippi in 1917, when Mr. John Weeks brought his recipe to the city. The city even holds an annual slugburger festival to honor the burger!
2. In 1987, the "MOS Burger" restaurant chain introduced the rice burger in Japan. What element of the classic hamburger was substituted by rice?

Answer: Buns

"MOS Burger" achieved success with the introduction of the rice burger, which is a popular food in East Asian countries like Japan and China.

The rice burger is made of two compressed rice "cakes", which function as the buns, and a meat patty inside, with various condiments.
3. Which Japanese cooking technique, which consists in glazing foods such as chicken and fish with soy sauce and sugar, can be used to make a burger?

Answer: Teriyaki

The teriyaki burger is a variation of the classic American hamburger, but the meat is either mixed with teriyaki sauce, or the hamburger is covered by the sauce. It is eaten in parts of Japan and Hawaii, among the Japanese-American community.

Tempura is a dish made of deep-fried vegetables and seafood, sushi is another Japanese dish that is made with rice and a combination of other foods, mainly seafood. Tonkatsu is a deep-fried pork cutlet.
4. Chandler Goff invented a rather odd burger in 2005. This burger consists of a hot dog, a deep-fried beef patty covered in chili, and a fried egg. How is this food called?

Answer: Hamdog

Chandler Goff invented the hamdog and started serving it at the bar he owns, "Mulligan's".

Obviously, this hamburger is not healthy at all. A University of Arkansas professor of surgery once advised against eating hamdogs, as it is too high in calories and fat.
5. A variation of the hamburger in Asia trades the normal buns for a leavened flatbread. How is this bread called?

Answer: Naan

Naan is a yeast-risen bread, and is made from white wheat flour. It is eaten in Asian countries like Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. A meat patty is inserted in the naan bread in order to make the naan burger.

Roti is a bread made from ground grain, paratha is a bread flavored with ghee (an Indian butter) and chapati is the most common bread in India, made from three simple ingredients: flour, water and salt.
6. Which type of fish is used in Alaska to make an alternative to beef burgers?

Answer: Salmon

Salmon burgers are offered in places like Alaska, where salmon is abundant. The burger can be seasoned with mayonnaise and several spices.
7. What is the Luther Burger?

Answer: A burger served with donuts instead of buns

The Luther Burger, as strange as it may sound, is a burger made with glazed donuts and meat inside them, sometimes with cheese.

Its origins are disputed, but the most popular theory is that it was created by Chandler Goff, when his bar "Mulligan's" ran out of buns. The burger is commonly traded as the "Krispy Kreme Burger".
8. In Colorado, a unique variant of the cheeseburger is eaten since the 1950's. It is a cheeseburger smothered in chili sauce, topped with onions and french fries. How is this dish called?

Answer: The Slopper

The slopper is mainly served in Colorado places such as Pueblo and Colorado Springs. Its origin is disputed, as various restaurants claim it as their invention.

The Tiki is a burger made of Swiss cheese, mushrooms and onions, the Dirty Love Burger is made with a fried egg and bacon, and the Stodg is served in Dallas and is made of beef, smoked bacon, Cheddar cheese and a fried egg.
9. Two Minneapolis restaurants, which are located on the same street, claim to have invented a special type of hamburger, which contains cheese on the inside of the meat rather than over it. How is the burger called?

Answer: Juicy Lucy

The Juicy Lucy, also spelled as "Jucy Lucy", is claimed to be invented by two restaurants: "Matt's Bar" and "The 5-8 Club". Both have issued advertisements against the other, like "if it's spelled right, it's done right", as "The 5-8 Club" spells the word "juicy" correctly, while "Matt's Bar" omits the "i".

The slider refers to a small-sized hamburger, while the banquet burger refers to a burger with bacon and cheese, and the butter burger is a hamburger with butter either as an ingredient of the meat, or on the top of the patty.
10. In India, a popular variation of the American hamburger is made with beef, chicken or lamb, yogurt and onions, and seasoned with an Indian mix of spices, which gives the burger its name. How is the burger called?

Answer: Curry burger

The curry burger also includes green peppers and other spices, and is served in normal burger buns. Other Indian burger variations include coriander, masala powder and cumin.

Curry is a well-known Indian mix of spices, also used to make a very spicy dish of the same name.
