This was a highly controversial painting because the nude woman at the center of the composition looks directly at the spectator. Another of Manet's paintings, "Olympia," was controversial for many of the same reasons.

David painted his poet friend in the moment after he had been killed.

Although the "fountain" (actually a urinal) was signed by one R. Mutt, the artist was really Marcel Duchamp.
