Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Scrabble players will be all too familiar with QAT, the word we tend to use to get rid of a Q without waiting for a U. What's the definition of this useful word?

Answer: The leaves of an evergreen shrub

Not only are the leaves of the shrub Catha edulis (qat) mildly intoxicant, the word is worth at least 12 points in Scrabble. By virtue of its brevity, it's one of the most-often played words.
2. What would you most likely do in a SUQ?

Answer: Shop

A suq is a market or bazaar. The word can also be spelled SOUK.
3. A recent addition to some Scrabble arsenals has been the only acceptable two-letter Q word. What is it?

Answer: Qi

"Until March 2006 and the release of the OWL2, which for the first time included QI as an acceptable word, an important strategy was to memorize the words which have a Q but no U, in case they had a Q on their rack without a U. The addition of QI has made the U-less Q words less critical, since the probability that a player will have an unplayable Q has been significantly reduced." (From wikipedia.com)
4. A QINTAR is a former monetary unit of which country?

Answer: Albania

Also written as QINDAR and QINDARKA, the qintar was one-hundredth of a lek. Albania no longer uses the qintar, but the word remains. Several other countries have or had lonely Q currencies: Yemen (the buqsha), Azerbaijan (the qepiq) and Saudi Arabia (the qirsh).
5. Of the lonely Q words QAID, QANAT, QOPH and BUQSHA, which is the only Hebrew one?

Answer: Qoph

Qoph is the nineteenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Qanat (an irrigation tunnel) is Persian; the other two are Arabic.
6. There are many wonderful place names that don't need Us after their Qs. Many of them are Arabic; others are Inuit. Which of the following places is NOT in Canada?

Answer: Zaqaziq

ZAQAZIQ can also be written as ZAGAZIG, and is in Egypt. (Of the four, it seems the one with the easiest pronunciation...unless you're Inuit, I guess.)
7. Africa has some lovely lonely Q words, like QWAQWA, a place in South Africa. What African thing is a MBAQANGA?

Answer: A dance

MBAQANGA is accepted in UK but not US Scrabble. Place names like Qwaqwa aren't allowed in either, of course.
8. YAQONA is the Fijian term for a certain intoxicating drink native to that land. What is it more commonly called?

Answer: Kava

Yaqona (kava) is made from a tropical root, soaked and squeezed...or, more traditionally, chewed up and spit out into a communal bowl.
9. "SHEQEL" is an alternate spelling for the Israeli currency SHEKEL. How is "SHEQEL" pluralized?

Answer: Sheqelim

Alternate spellings are Sheqal and Sheqalim. Of course, the plural "Shekels" is frequently seen, especially in English.
10. These four actual words all end in Q. Which is the only one listed as obsolete in the "Oxford English Dictionary"?

Answer: Rencq

RENCQ is an obsolete spelling of "rank". UMIAQ is an Inuit boat; TRANQ is a shortened form of "tranquilizer"; TALAQ is an Islamic term meaning "repudiation of marriage" or divorce.
