Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I'm having so much fun with Honeybun."

Answer: South Pacific

From "Honeybun." South Pacific had many classic songs such as "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair," "Some Enchanted Evening," and "Bali Ha'i," but this was the only one that I liked.
2. "I see heaven when I see thee!"

Answer: Man of La Mancha

From the song "Dulcinea." An elderly man, Don Quixote, who believes he is a knight, shows up at an inn and declares a barmaid to be the lady Dulcinea. This is his beautiful love song to her.
3. "And now a girl has come who has her eyes."

Answer: The Secret Garden

From the song "Lily's Eyes," sung by two men who remark on how much Mary Lennox looks like her aunt - particularly her eyes. The repeated line "She has her eyes" prompted one of my friends to exclaim, "Well, she should give them back!" Hmm... looks like she missed the point.
4. "Yes, the woman was perfection, so I'm here with him!"

Answer: A Little Night Music

From "It Would Have Been Wonderful." Two men in love with the same woman lament the fact that she's so irresistibly perfect.
5. "The evidence suggests she has other interests."

Answer: Evita

From "Peron's Latest Flame," an angry song sung by the aristocracy about how Evita is butting her way through into Peron's political affairs.
6. "I don't know what's going on, can't work it out at all, whatever made you choose me?"

Answer: Song and Dance

From "Unexpected Song," a beautiful song about how love springs on you when you least expect it and changes you all around.
7. "My land's only borders lie around my heart."

Answer: Chess

From the song "Anthem," a patriotic song about loyalty to one's country.
8. "I would murder him right there, but first I die."

Answer: A Little Night Music

From "Every Day a Little Death," sung by two women whose husbands are both in love with someone else. They lament how painful love can be.
9. "No more hunger and thirst, but first be a person who needs people."

Answer: Funny Girl

From the song "People," which soared on the billboard charts after the release of the single. It simply says how living and doing everything isolated from people keeps you from some great experiences.
10. "Please sign the book on your way out the door, that will be all, if we need you we'll call, but I don't think that's likely, somehow."

Answer: Evita

From "Goodbye and Thank You." This song has a cynical sense of humor and details Eva's many lovers and her strategy for throwing them away as soon as they were no longer useful.
11. "It's a bet he's insane as only a John can be for a Jane."

Answer: Guys and Dolls

From the title song, "Guys and Dolls," which talks about the crazy things guys do when they're in love.
12. "For our captors there required of us songs, and our tormentors, mirth."

Answer: Godspell

From "On the Willows," a heartbreaking farewell song from Jesus to his disciples before he dies.
13. "But is Hans Christian Andersen ever risque?"

Answer: A Little Night Music

From "Soon." This song is sung by a man who has just wed a girl much younger than himself, and is trying to decide how to seduce her.
14. "You'll make it through, 'cause I am liking you, and whatever you need, Mama will provide."

Answer: Once On This Island

From "Mama Will Provide," sung by a protecting goddess to a young girl traveling to meet the boy she loves.
15. "This is the day, just see it shine, when all I've lived for becomes mine."

Answer: Jekyll and Hyde

From "This Is the Moment," sung by an inspired Dr. Jekyll about the joys of life.
16. "I've simply got to march, my heart's a drummer."

Answer: Funny Girl

From "Don't Rain On My Parade." This song is sung by Fanny Brice, a performer who is leaving show business to join her lover on a boat trip to Europe. People tell her she's crazy, but she tells them that she's going to live life the way she wants and they can't stop her.
17. "I'm not talking of a hurried night, a frantic tumble then a shy good-bye."

Answer: Evita

From "I'd Be Surprisingly Good For You," a strangely cold love song between Eva Duarte and Juan Peron as they realize that their joining forces romantically could further both their careers.
18. "You're on a heavenly trip, and the devil will drag you under!"

Answer: Guys and Dolls

From the show-stopper "Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat." In this song, a reformed gambler shares his story about how he came to see the light. Of course, he made it all up . . . but that doesn't stop it from being one of the most classic moments in musical theater history.
19. "She'd strike you as unenlightened." "No, I'd strike her first!"

Answer: A Little Night Music

From the delightful "You Must Meet My Wife." A man and his lover meet again for the first time in several years. The man begins to praise his wife while his mistress tries to lure him into bed.
20. "A new hope, something to convince me to renew hope."

Answer: Jekyll and Hyde

From "A New Life," a song about the dreariness of life and the hope of a new one.
21. "Rain makes a road such a dangerous place."

Answer: Once On This Island

From "Rain." In this song, the gods plan for a young boy and girl to meet by crashing the boy's car near the girl's house.
22. "You've got nothing to hit but the heights!"

Answer: Gypsy

From the amazing "Everything's Coming Up Roses." Nearly anyone interested in musical theater knows this song, as it's one of the most well-known out there. It shows a determined Mama Rose vowing to make her younger daughter the show-stopping performer her older daughter never was.
23. "This is my quest, to follow that star."

Answer: Man of La Mancha

From "The Impossible Dream." Don Quixote, an elderly man who believes he is a knight on a quest, is asked why he does the things he does. His response is this stirring song about the journey of fighting what seem to be impossible odds.
24. "In every way, his is the only music that makes me dance."

Answer: Funny Girl

From "The Music That Makes Me Dance." This powerful ballad, sung by Fanny Brice about her imprisoned husband, was replaced by the song "My Man" in the movie version of this show.
25. "You'll get by, you always have before."

Answer: Evita

From "Another Suitcase in Another Hall," a vulnerable character song about the ups and downs of sleeping your way to power. In the movie version, Eva sings this, but in the stage version, it is sung by Peron's mistress, a secondary character.

By the way, if you wanted a list -- those 13 new musicals I saw were "South Pacific," "Once On This Island," "Gypsy," "Evita," "Funny Girl," "Jekyll and Hyde," "A Little Night Music," "Song and Dance," "Chess," "Godspell," "Man of La Mancha," "The Secret Garden," and "Guys and Dolls."

Keep an eye out for my next quiz of this kind -- as soon as I hear some new shows!
