Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As the play begins, Jon's birthday is fast approaching. How old will he be?

Answer: 30

Jon, originally played Off-Broadway by Raul Esparza, is rapidly approaching his 30th birthday, which scares him. Thirty, as he sees it, is officially middle-age. He sings about his concerns, as characters in musical theatre are apt to do, in the opening number "30/90".
2. Which character contracts HIV?

Answer: Michael

Michael is Jon's best friend, who has "sold out" to the corporate world. Jon visits his workplace and stands out rather aloofly from the people in suits.
3. "Tick...Tick...BOOM" started out as a one-person rock monologue.

Answer: True

Larson originally performed the show all by himself, it being largely autobiographical. After the opening of "Rent" and Larson's untimely death, "Tick...Tick..BOOM" was expanded into a three-person show.
4. What does Susan do to support herself?

Answer: She teaches ballet

Susan is a dancer who teaches "wealthy and untalented children" ballet. Michael is a research executive and Jon is a waiter.
5. What color is Susan's dress?

Answer: Green

One needs only to listen to the song "Green, Green Dress" in order to determine the answer to this question. According to the song, it has "twenty buttons and a strap."
6. When Jon gets out of work, in which kind of car does Michael pick him up?

Answer: A BMW

The fancy car is a further sign of Michael's success and, therefore, Jon's lack of success. Michael takes Jon to see his new apartment.
7. Jon's work has been seen by a legendary composer. Who is it implied to be?

Answer: Stephen Sondheim

Although the composer was only referred to by "St----- S-------", who else could it be but Stephen Sondheim? The song "Sunday" in "Tick...Tick...BOOM" is a homage to the similarly-titled ending number of Sondheim's "Sunday in the Park with George". In fact, the composer's identity is revealed near the end of the show, and he is indeed Stephen Sondheim.
8. Who sings "Real Life"?

Answer: Michael

Michael sings this song after wishing that his job allowed him to settle down, like Susan wants to do with Jon.
9. Where does Susan go?

Answer: Massachusetts

Shortly before the show ends, Susan moves to Massachusetts, tired of the hustle and bustle of New York City. Before she goes she gives Jon one thousand blank pieces of paper to Jon as a birthday present.
10. Michael gets Jon several belts for his birthday.

Answer: True

Jon had previously said that one sign of being well-off was having several belts. At the end of the play Michael encourages Jon to continue his career as an artist.
