Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Manananggal is a vampire-like creature from the Philippines with a body that splits apart. What happens?

Answer: Flying torso separates at the waist

The Manananggal is one of several Aswang (demons, evil spirits) from Filipino folklore.

The winged upper body detaches at the waist to fly off in search of prey. While separated, the lower body is vulnerable, and sprinkling crushed garlic, salt, or ash on the lower half will prevent the two halves from rejoining, essentially killing it.

The first Filipino horror movie was "Manananggal", a silent film from 1927. While the detachable-body monster is featured, little else is known about the movie.
2. The Yara-ma-yha-who is a small, red humanoid creature with a large head and octopus-like suckers on its fingers and toes. If someone falls asleep down under a fig tree, it will drop down and attack. What country is it from?

Answer: Australia

After draining their victim's blood and leaving them weak, the Yara-ma-yha-who leaves, only to return later and swallow their victim whole and take a nap. After waking up, the Yara-ma-yha-who vomits the victim back up, however they are a little redder and shorter than before. Repeated feedings will eventually turn the victim into a Yara-ma-yha-who.
3. From Ghana, the Asasabonsam is a tree-dwelling vampire. It has iron hooks instead of which body part?

Answer: Feet

The Asasabonsam has iron teeth and feeds off both humans and animals, with some stories stating that the entire creature is consumed, even the bones.

When attacking humans, it bites the thumbs off first.
4. The Russian Upyr is a vampire that is active from noon until midnight. From this information, we can surmise that what won't hurt it?

Answer: Sunlight

The Upyr have an overwhelming craving for blood, especially from children. They possess iron-like teeth, and will gnaw the frozen ground to escape their graves during the cold Russian winters.

Note that while you can destroy an Upyr by driving a wooden stake through their heart, you only get one chance. If the stake goes in with one strike the Upyr is defeated. If it takes multiple blows, then the Upyr will re-animate, stronger than before.
5. The head of the Malaysian Penanggalan detatches from her body at night, and flies around, with glowing organs dangling below it. In order to fit the organs back inside her body, she soaks them in what pickling liquid?

Answer: Vinegar

The body may be stored in vinegar at night, in order to prevent it from decaying. The smell of vinegar is the primary indicator that an otherwise normal looking woman is a Penanggalan.

The Penanggalan is another creature that prefers to feed on newborns. It uses its hair and organs as prehensile organs to move objects, such as window latches and doorknobs, to gain entry. Thorny bushes, sticks, or fruit can be placed around entry points and under floorboards to prevent it from entering.
6. From Scotland, the Baobhan-sith is a faerie vampire who dances with her male victims before ripping them apart with her claws. According to some stories, what is she hiding underneath her dress?

Answer: Cloven hooves

Travelers in remote wilderness areas should be wary of beautiful women who want to dance, especially if they are wearing a white or green dress.

The Baobhan-sith avoids sunlight and iron, and a potential victim would be able to escape by hiding next to horses (with iron horse-shoes) until dawn.
7. The only way to prevent an attack from the Irish Dearg-due is to put what on her grave?

Answer: Pile of stones

Literally "red blood sucker", the Dearg-due is supposedly a specific vampire, a beautiful girl who was in love with a peasant but forced to marry a cruel, older, and wealthier man.

Dying (either by suicide or from a broken heart), she was buried near Strongbow's Tree in Waterford, only to rise again to take revenge on her father and husband. Unsatisfied by her revenge, she continues to haunt the area. She is kept in her grave by the stones piled on top of it.
8. If you find yourself facing a vampire on the island of Crete, you may be up against a Kathakano. How can you destroy it?

Answer: Cut off its head, and boil it in vinegar

Greece is also home to the Brukalaco, which is destroyed by cutting off and burning the head, or Lamia, which are female half-animal (typically the lower half of a snake) and can be killed with normal weapons.

A wooden stake through the heart destroys the Sampiro from Albania.

Burying at a crossroads will defeat the Ogoljen of Bohemia.

Putting poppy seeds in the grave of a Prussian Gierach will kill it.
9. The Neuntoter from Germany is thought to carry plagues and pestilence. Fortunately, it can be destroyed by which simple citrus fruit?

Answer: Lemon

A child who is born with teeth and dies as an infant may become a Neuntoter, but this can be prevented by burying them with a lemon in their mouth.

Keeping lemons and lemon juice around the home can also ward off the creature.
10. Indian folklore tells of the Brahmaparusha, a vampire who wears the intestines of its victims. The favorite food of the Brahmaparusha, however, is which organ?

Answer: Brain

The Brahmaparusha carries a skull cup, which it uses to collect the blood from the victim before drinking out of it. After consuming the brain and wearing the intestines, the creature will dance around the corpse. Or corpses, as it usually takes multiple victims to satiate its hunger.

Unfortunately, there is no known way to destroy or stop a Brahmaparusha. You can only run, hide, or be eaten.
