Question 4 of 10
4. One of the least popular of Shakespeare's tragedies might well be "Titus Andronicus"; certainly it is one of the least performed. But lit students might well recall the name DEMETRIUS in this play. He was one of the sons of Tamora, the Queen of the Goths. There is yet another main Shakespearean character by this name. Do you remember from which play? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "The Merchant of Venice", that remarkable woman PORTIA saves her lover's best friend, Antonio, from certain death by her brilliant arguments, declaiming all the while "the quality of mercy is not strained..." But there is yet another Portia, a strong woman who stands by her man showing her valour and strength of character. Can you recall from which play?

Answer: "Julius Caesar"

Portia, Brutus' wife, is disturbed that he seems to be in turmoil, and begs him to take her into confidence, saying "I have made strong proof of my constancy..." by wounding herself to show him the strength of her resolve...In the end, unable to bear the tragedy of the events as they unfold, she kills herself...
2. Those who have read Shakespeare would be familiar with VINCENTIO, the Duke in "Measure for Measure". But there is yet another Vincentio in another of Shakespeare's comedies. Can you recall which one?

Answer: "The Taming of the Shrew"

Vincentio is the father of Lucentio, who loves Bianca, the shrewish Katherine(Kate)'s sister.Unfortunately for him, Baptista, the girls' father has decreed that Bianca cannot marry unless the shrewish Kate is married first...But that doesn't stop him from trying!
3. Ah JULIET! So young and so tragic! Romeo dies for the love of her, and then she dies too, in "Romeo and Juliet". But you'll get points only if you can recall where else the name Juliet recurred in the Shakespearean plays...

Answer: "Measure for Measure"

This Juliet is the beloved of Claudio, not Romeo!
4. One of the least popular of Shakespeare's tragedies might well be "Titus Andronicus"; certainly it is one of the least performed. But lit students might well recall the name DEMETRIUS in this play. He was one of the sons of Tamora, the Queen of the Goths. But there is another more easily recalled Demetrius in one of Shakespeare's better known plays. Now this play is performed often, so it should be easy....

Answer: "A Midsummer Night's Dream"

This Demetrius is supposed to marry Hermia, the daughter of Egeus. But Hermia is in love with Lysander instead. It is Helena who loves Demetrius....what a tangled web, made more delightfully confused by the machinations of a certain naughty little imp named Puck!
5. BRUTUS, besides being an honourable man, was the protagonist of "Julius Caesar", whose love for Rome led him to assassinate Caesar. Can you recall yet another Shakespearean play in which the name Brutus recurs?

Answer: "Coriolanus"

This Brutus is Junius Brutus, tribune of the people of Rome, not Marcus Brutus, conspirator and assassin of Caesar.
6. More on the histories. Menenius AGRIPPA, friend of Caius Marcius Coriolanus, in the play "Coriolanus",is an eloquent mediator whose articulations lend colour to the story. In which other play does the name Agrippa recur?

Answer: "Antony and Cleopatra"

Agrippa in "Antony and Cleopatra" is a friend to Octavius Caesar. Not a major character, but a name one might remember...
7. ANTONIO. Now here's a popular name. Besides being the object of Shylock's hatred in "The Merchant of Venice", the name Antonio also occurs in "Two Gentlemen of Verona" in the form of the father of Proteus, one of the two said gentlemen, and in "Twelfth Night" as a friend of Sebastian's. There is yet another main Shakespearean character by this name. Do you remember from which play?

Answer: "The Tempest"

Antonio in "The Tempest" is Prospero's brother, who has usurped the dukedom of Milan from him. In his very first appearance he utters some rather nasty swear words, which sort of sets the tone of his character....
8. VALENTINE, in "Twelfth Night" appears in the opening scene with Duke Orsino, describing the lovely Olivia to him in picturesque terms. Valentine is also the name of another of Shakespeare's protagonists...Name the play.

Answer: "Two Gentlemen of Verona"

Valentine is one of the two gentlemen of Verona, beloved of Silvia, and friend of Proteus (the other gentleman!).
9. HELENA,the strong and admirable daughter of a poor doctor in "All's Well that Ends Well" goes to great lengths to woo (the rather pompous, in my opinion)Bertram. There is another Helena, in another of Shakespeare's plays, who suffers from unrequited love for her man...Which play?

Answer: "A Midsummer Night's Dream"

Helena doggedly pursues Demetrius, who cannot give her time of day, and who, alas, is supposed to marry Hermia! In the end, all's well that ends well (!) and each lover is united with his/her true beloved!
10. HERMIONE is Queen to Leontes, and mother to the lovely Perdita in "The Winter's Tale." HERMIA (not strictly speaking, a 'double take') appears in one of Shakespeare's most delightful comedies...Which one?

Answer: "A Midsummer Night's Dream"

Hermia is in love with Lysander, but is betrothed to Demetrius. Helena is in love with Demetrius, who doesn't know she exists, and Titania, Queen of the fairies, is giving Oberon, the King of the fairies, a hard time. Stir in a little mischief-making Puck who makes them all fall in love with each other, and chaos reigns supreme...now you know why a certain type of humour is called puckish!
