Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the Reverend Abbess at Mushindo Abbey during Lord Genji's lifetime?

Answer: Jintoku

Before she became Abbess Jintoku she had been known as Kimi. She grew up in a neighboring village and had been one of the children to follow Jimbo. She was sold to a merchant by her family and was rescued by Goro, who was to later become known as the 'Holy One'.

She was Reverend Abbess for over seventy years and lived to be a centenarian. Mushindo Abbey had originally been an abbey, but Jintoku only knew it as a monastery since that's all it had been during her lifetime. Once she was made Reverend Abbess, it once again became an abbey.
2. Who was Lord Kiyori's 'visitor'?

Answer: Lady Shizuka

The original Lady Shizuka was the wife of Hironobu, the first Great Lord of Okaoka. She had the power of vision and seeing the future and was known to be a witch. According to Kiyori, he had met with her for sixty-four years and she was with him on his last night, which also happened to be her final night.

They were living in two different time periods; Kiyori was living in 1860 while Lady Shizuka was in 1311. She gave birth to a daughter named Sen, who would marry Danjuro and they would carry on the name of the Okumichi clan. Lady Shizuka was killed during Go's betrayal of Lord Hironobu.
3. What was the name of Lord Genji's mother?

Answer: Midori

Lady Midori was the daughter of Lord Nao of Shiroishi. She was married to Genji's father when she was only eleven years old. The day she was to marry Yorimasa, her father found her at the top of a tree she had just climbed. When Genji was four years old, she died during the birth of Genji's sister.
4. Each chapter in the book was introduced by an excerpt from one of the writings of Genji's family. What was the name of the set of scrolls written by Lady Shizuka?

Answer: Aki-no-hashi

'Aki-no-hashi' means 'Autumn Bridge'. Lady Shizuka wrote the scrolls before her death in 1311. They were later found during the building of Emily's chapel in the Akaoka Domain and were delivered to Emily. As Emily began to read them, she realized that they did not belong to the 'Suzume-no-kumo' which she had been translating, but that they had been written by a woman.

The more she read, the more they seemed to be written directly to her and contained predictions about what would happen and how Emily would know that the words were true.
5. Emily had several prospects for marriage, but she could only choose one person. Whom did Emily marry?

Answer: Lord Genji

Emily and Genji loved each other, though Genji did not show his feelings for a very long time. He had seen the vision of the birth of his and Emily's daughter, but he tried to avoid it since he also saw that Emily was to die in childbirth. He had encouraged her marriage to either Robert Farrington or Charles Smith. Emily could not decide since she loved Genji. Finally, after realizing that he loved her too, she decided that she would not marry one of the others, but that she would indeed stay with Genji. Genji was the Great Lord of Akaoka and he had been one of Emily's friends for over six years.
6. Makoto was raised as the son of Matthew Stark and his wife, but who was Makoto's real mother?

Answer: Heiko

Heiko was the geisha and ninja who had been Lord Genji's lover. When Genji sent Heiko away to America, she was already pregnant with his child. She arrived in America and gave birth to Makoto, but she died soon afterward. Makoto was raised to believe that he was the son of Matthew and his wife. Makoto went to Japan to try and find out answers from his father, and he was told that his mother had actually died in childbirth and that her name was Heiko.
7. Who was the original Lady Shizuka's father?

Answer: Go

Go was Lord Hironobu's chief bodyguard and adviser and was the one to train the Okumichi samurai to be the great and legendary cavalrymen that they were. He was not really Japanese and had come to Japan during the invasion of the Mongols. He turned against the Mongols who had captured his people and he stayed in Japan.

His name was Eroghut, but became known as Go since the Japanese could not pronounce his real name. After Lord Hironobu's victory at the age of six, Go met Lady Nowaki in the castle and she had already determined that he should be hers. Go saw this as an act of his dead witch mother to continue the sorceress bloodline that had to pass through the line in the form of a daughter.
8. What was the name of the Reverend Abbess of Mushindo Abbey that took care of the young Lady Shizuka until she married Lord Hironobu?

Answer: Suku

Abbess Suku took care of Shizuka even though Shizuka screamed all the time and was thought to be mad. Suku had to clean her and change her. Once Shizuka reached an age where she began to become a woman, she stopped having the visions all the time and began to act normally. Soon after, Lord Hironobu saw her and decided she was very beautiful. Abbess Suku tried to prevent him from seeing her again because she knew that he would take Shizuka away and she feared what would happen if he did. Abbess Suku was actually Shizuka's mother, Nowaki.

She was the daughter of Lord Bandan, who had built the Abbey as a hiding place for his unmarried pregnant daughter.
9. Emily did not have many friends in Japan, but there was one woman whom she considered a close friend. What was the name of Emily's friend who gave her life to save Emily?

Answer: Hanako

Hanako was originally a servant to Lord Kiyori, Genji's grandfather. She later became a servant to Lord Genji, who arranged for her to marry one of his samurai. Hanako was married to Hidé, Genji's chief bodyguard. She had lost her left arm during a battle that took place at Mushindo Monastery.

She also had a son named Iwao. Hanako helped Emily with her Japanese and she also accompanied Emily much of the time. She was killed at Mushindo Abbey when Taro, the head of the cavalry, decided to betray Lord Genji and plotted with Lord Saemon to kill Emily. Hanako was trying to save Emily because she knew of the prophecy that Emily was to bear Lord Genji's child.
10. Who had Abbot Zengen been before he became the abbot of Mushindo Monastery?

Answer: Lord Nao

Lord Nao was the father of Midori, Genji's mother. After his wife passed away and his land was not what it once was, he gave up his lordship and began wandering. He had traveled for many years to the different Buddhist temples in Japan. He returned back to the ruins that had once been Mushindo Abbey and became Abbot Zengen of Mushindo Monastery.

He rebuilt the monastery with the help of Goro and Kimi.
