Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the upcoming event that had the family at odds with each other?

Answer: a coming out party

The Arches was a huge coming out ball. Olympia was very excited that both of her twin daughters, Veronica and Virginia, had been invited. The Arches was a long-standing tradition in Olympia's family. Olympia had made her debut at The Arches, as had Olympia's mother, both of her grandmothers, and both of her great-grandmothers.
2. To what other right of passage for young girls was The Arches compared?

Answer: Bat Mitzvah

When Olympia was telling Harry and Max about her own debut at The Arches, Harry commented that it sounded like a Bat Mitzvah, because it was a special moment in a young girl's life. A Bat Mitzvah is a coming-of-age ceremony in a Jewish girl's life, while a Bar Mitzvah is a coming-of-age ceremony in a Jewish boy's life.
3. What was Chauncey's reaction when he heard that Veronica didn't want to attend The Arches?

Answer: He threatened not to pay the girls' tuition.

Chauncey, Olympia's ex-husband and the father of Veronica and Victoria, was extremely angry that Veronica didn't want to attend. He said that he wouldn't tolerate a "revolutionary" daughter, and that his daughter was "living the life of a political radical".

He first threatened not to pay Veronica's tuition for the upcoming school year, but then, figuring that Veronica would change her mind for her sister's sake, he changed his mind and threatened not to pay either girl's tuition.
4. Why did Olympia's mother-in-law want to attend The Arches?

Answer: All of these

Frieda, Olympia's mother-in-law, was a Holocaust survivor, who had lived in poverty and worked in sweatshops as a young girl. She'd never had the chance to attend anything like The Arches, so she wanted a chance to attend for her own enjoyment, as well as that of Olympia and the girls.
5. What happened to a member or members of the family in the week before The Arches, which caused anxiety over possibly missing it?

Answer: all of these

It was a very stressful week for the family. It started on Saturday morning when Olympia woke up with the flu. Then on Sunday, Max, the little boy, came down with the chicken pox. Also on Sunday, Virginia called home from university to say that she had bronchitis. On Monday, Olympia had to go to work even though she was sick.

A blizzard developed throughout the day on Monday, and Frieda slipped on some ice and broke her ankle. Olympia went out that evening and picked Frieda up from the hospital so she could stay with them. Harry, Olympia's husband, was going through a rough patch at work so he couldn't help Olympia to care for everyone.
6. What did Veronica do that made her mother and father so upset?

Answer: She got a tattoo.

When Olympia was in Veronica's room, she saw that there was a huge tattoo of a butterfly on Veronica's back. The girls had always been told that they couldn't get tattoos, and that their ears were the only things they could get pierced. To make matters worse, Veronica's dress for The Arches was backless.
7. Who was Virginia's escort for The Arches?

Answer: Her brother Charlie was her escort.

Olympia told Virginia that it was better not to have a romantic interest as an escort, because something could happen to the relationship between the time that the names of the escorts were submitted and the actual event. It turned out to be a good thing that Virginia had asked Charlie to be her escort, because her boyfriend Steve broke up with her the night before the event.

However, he did attend, because she said it would be harder for her if he didn't.
8. What was unusual about Veronica's escort for The Arches?

Answer: He had blue hair.

Veronica's escort, Jeff Adams, arrived with bright blue hair, but when the event committee inspected everyone at the rehearsal in the afternoon, they gave him an ultimatum. He could either change his hair back to a normal colour by nine o'clock that evening, or they would find another escort for Veronica.
9. What was Charlie's big secret?

Answer: He was gay.

Olympia and Frieda had been feeling for quite some time that Charlie had something on his mind. He told Olympia the night of the event that he was gay. Although Olympia was stunned, she didn't show it, and she thanked Charlie for telling her.
10. Who unexpectedly showed up at The Arches?

Answer: Olympia's husband

Harry had been adamant all along that he would not attend. He felt that it was discriminatory against Jewish people and black people, and that as a judge, he shouldn't be involved in an event such as that. He was also angry about the discrimination on behalf of his mother. However, Harry's mother had told him to get over himself, and it caused him to re-think his position.
