Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The best place to start is with David Copperfield's mother. Can you tell me her name?

Answer: Clara

David's mother was named Clara. She was widowed at a young age but married for a second time to a most despicable character. Tragically, she and her newborn second son, Edward, died, leaving David in the clutches of his cruel stepfather.
2. What was the name of the cruel and despicable man who married David's mother and became David's stepfather?

Answer: Edward Murdstone

After marrying Clara, Edward Murdstone and his equally cruel sister, Jane, moved into Clara's house. Following her death, he sent David to work in a warehouse he owned, where David was treated very badly, so he ran away to seek out his only known relative - his father's aunt.
3. What was the name of the faithful servant in the Copperfield home who tried to protect David's mother and David from the cruelty of David's stepfather?

Answer: Clara Peggotty

Clara Peggotty (always called just Peggotty because she and David's mother shared the same Christian name) was a staunch friend to David and helped him every chance she could throughout his life. After David's mother's death (she died in Peggotty's arms), Peggotty married Mr. Barkis and she lived very happily with him.

After his death she went to live with and look after David's Great Aunt.
4. What was the name of the very optimistic but debt-riddled man met by David in London, whilst searching for his aunt?

Answer: Wilkins Micawber

Mr Micawber was a very gentle man who spent some time in the Debtors' Prison because he was always in financial difficulty. However, he always thought "that something would turn up" and lived by the philosophy "Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen pounds nineteen and six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery."

He became a very good friend to David and later played a very important role before emigrating to Australia, where he became a Magistrate.
5. After many adventures along the way, David finally found his Great Aunt. Do you know her name?

Answer: Betsy Trotwood

David made his way to Dover, where he finally found his Great Aunt Betsy. She was very busy at that time chasing donkeys from her green. She took pity on David but because she did not like males very much, she insisted on calling him "Trotwood", which was her surname. She wanted David to have a good education, so she sent him to a school in Canterbury, Salem House.
6. What was the name of the charming boy, a few years older than David, who befriended him at Salem House?

Answer: James Steerforth

Although a good friend to David, Steerforth found himself enraptured by Peggotty's niece Little Em'ly, whom he later seduced after she ran away with him abroad. Her uncle, Daniel Peggotty, travelled the world in search of Little Em'ly and he ultimately found her and brought her home. They eventually emigrated to Australia.
7. Was was the name of Daniel Peggotty's nephew who loved Little Em'ly?

Answer: Ham Peggotty

Ham had been in love with Little Em'ly all his life and was going to marry her until James Steerforth came along and took her abroad, where he grew tired of her and dumped her and of course Daniel Peggotty found her and brought her home. When Steerforth was returning to England the ship he was travelling on was wrecked off the Yarmouth coast. Ham went into the water to try and save Steerforth, but they both drowned.
8. What was the name of the family who David's Great Aunt arranged for him to stay with while he was at school?

Answer: Wickfield

9. What was the name of the beautiful daughter of Mr Spenlow of Spenlow and Jorkins, Proctors, to whom David was articled?

Answer: Dora

David fell madly in love with Dora Spenlow and eventually married her after her father's death. She found it hard to cope with anything to do with running a house, preferring to spend her time playing with her dog "Jip." David and Dora were only married for a short time when Dora had a miscarriage which eventually led to her death.
10. What was the name of Mr Wickfield's villainous clerk who nearly succeeded in taking over Mr Wickfield's business, and who wanted to marry Agnes?

Answer: Uriah Heep

Uriah Heep always referred to himself as being "very 'umble" but had great plans for himself by plotting to ruin Mr Wickfield. He had embezzled all of David's Great Aunt Betsey's money but was eventually thwarted by none other than Mr Wilkins Micawber to whom Heep had given a job as a clerk. For his dastardly deeds, Uriah Heep was sentenced for transportation to Australia for life. David finally realised that he loved Agnes and they were married.
