1. For how long did the pact Roddy Abel made with the strange elderly man last in "The Bargain"?

Answer: 10 years

Roddy Abel started out very down on his luck at the beginning of this story. He couldn't get a job and had no place to live. But that all changed when he met a certain elderly man who took Roddy to lunch. They made a bargain that Roddy would have all the wealth and power he wanted for ten years. For those ten years, Roddy became the most famous deejay in the world.

But when the ten years were up, the man came back to collect his debt, the debt being Roddy's soul.
2. In "The Evil Eye", what was the hideous old woman who lived near Jean Paul called?

Answer: The Bat

"The Evil Eye" is a story that takes place in Paris, France. The main character was a young painter named Jean Paul who lived near a successful hotel, across from which a sinister old woman known as The Bat lived. When the tenants of the room directly across from The Bat began hanging themselves, Jean Paul figured out that The Bat had something to do with it.

He saw how she had fashioned an identical dummy of her latest victim and hung it on her stanchion, driving the person in the hotel crazy, and to commit the same action. So Jean Paul devised a plan to do the exact same thing to her, forcing The Bat to hang herself and freeing the city of her malice forever.
3. In "The Estate", the Torneys saw stone griffins guarding the main gate of the ancient estate. They also saw griffins at the cemetery, but how were these different?

Answer: They were holding swords

John and Molly Torney were newlyweds who had planned to stay in a cottage that was part of the vast von Niemand estate. The estate had a dark past, and the founder was reputed to have practiced black magic. The Torneys also heard that no one had ever managed to stay on the estate longer than 24 hours; they just disappeared. John and Molly later found a path which led to the family cemetery. Guarding the founder of the estate's mausoleum were griffins identical to those at the front gate, except these were carrying swords. Just then, they heard strange noises and fled the graveyard. That night, the stone griffins came for John and Molly.
4. In what form did the serpent first appear to Chang in "The Mysterious Serpent"?

Answer: A beautiful girl

"The Mysterious Serpent" takes place a very long time ago in the area of the South China Sea. The main character was a young man named Chang, who ventured to a mysterious island in hopes of finding treasure. Instead, he found a very beautiful girl who enchanted him, but as they were conversing, she fled suddenly. Just as she disappeared, a gigantic serpent appeared and tried to kill Chang. Chang escaped with his life by feeding the serpent a poison pill and chopping its head off. Later, Chang was convinced that the serpent found him because it first appeared in the form of the beautiful girl.
5. In "The Magician", which of The Great Cosmo's actions really caused his wife to disappear?

Answer: His whispered incantation

The Great Cosmo was a professional magician who had got his big break performing in a theater. The show was not going well, however, until Cosmo did the trick where he would make his assistant, a.k.a. his wife, disappear. Cosmo muttered some gibberish and called it "the mysterious incantation from the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead", but the trick was on him when his wife actually did disappear.

After the show, Cosmo tried to find her, and he remembered the words he had said. He tried them again, and saw a horrible shape take form. Later, neither Cosmo nor his wife were anywhere to be found.
6. Which war did Jeff witness in "The Phantom Battle"?

Answer: U.S. Civil War

"The Phantom Battle" is a story of Jeff, a bicyclist. On one of his cycling journeys, Jeff took a break and accidentally dozed off. When he woke up, he inexplicably found himself right in the middle of the Civil War. The scene was very graphic and brutal, but suddenly it disappeared. Jeff further found an old bullet which had pierced his bike tire.

He had witnessed a phantom battle, where these spirits had kept returning to fight the battle for eternity.
7. In "The Toad Thing", which part of the house did the evil occupant come from?

Answer: The cellar

Tom and Dan were two youths who ended up spending the night in a deserted old house. As they were trying to go to sleep, they heard something come up from the cellar. Tom went to investigate, but he never returned. Dan was unable to find him, and the thing came back up from the cellar again. From what he could make out in the darkness, it had a human body and the head of a toad. Dan got away, but as he was running, he hit his head. Dan woke up in a local hospital, and was told that the house had once been inhabited by a couple and their half-wit son, who had a deformed head shaped like a toad's.

They would capture travelers and bury them in quicksand in the cellar, and it was said that their spirits still haunted the place. Tom's body was never found.
8. In "The Fulfillment", how did the aliens attempt to communicate with some humans?

Answer: Through animals

Aliens had been observing the human species for quite some time. They had tried to communicate with some humans by using animals such as bears, eagles, and snakes, but the people were always destroyed in the process. Other strange and seemingly unrelated incidents occurred as well.

The aliens used the eyes of the animals to collect information, and when it was determined that the human race could not be saved, it was completely destroyed. The Earth was then ultimately inherited by the animals.
9. In "Bye-Bye Baby", what did the Thing at the beginning of the story look like?

Answer: A giant blob

When the married couple (their names are never given) first saw the Thing outside their cabin, it looked like a giant, oily blob. The man went outside with his shotgun to destroy it. When he shot the Thing, the blob disappeared, and in its place was a beautiful woman.

The next event that occurs is that the wife has taken her husband to divorce court. She claimed that she found her husband in a cave with the woman. She remembered nothing of the giant blob. The husband and the woman vanished soon after, only to be spotted by a hunter, who said they burst into flame before his eyes.

A note to his wife was found in the husband's things, in which he said, "Bye-bye, baby".
10. What was the name of the ill-fated ship in "The Jonah"?

Answer: The Foxfire

A young seaman was on assignment to work on the Foxfire, when an older officer approached him and told him not to board the ship. The officer told a story of the original skipper of the Foxfire, who one night at sea had ignored another ship's distress call and let everyone on board that ship die.

The skipper became known as a Jonah and was shunned by everyone. When the skipper stowed away on another ship, the dead crew of the other ship crawled aboard and told him that he would command the Foxfire again, and they would come for him and his crew and decide their judgment.

These ghosts were covered in seaweed and slime. The seaman didn't believe the story, and when he saw he had reached his destination, he saw that the officer had disappeared.

But in his place on the ground was a pile of seaweed and slime. Creepy!
