Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What Teblor tribe is Karsa Orlong from?

Answer: Uryd

The Uryd are a warrior tribe from northern Genabackis. They wield wooden swords hardened by blood-oil, and thus can fight against steel. They worship the seven Faces of the Rock and take pride in killing children, who we find out later are any lowlanders, since the Teblor are much taller than them.

Blood-oil may be related to otataral dust, as both negate magic.
2. Karsa, Bairoth, and Delum release a creature from beneath a stone slab. Although she doesn't call herself this, what do they say she is?

Answer: Demon

Her name is Calm, a Bringer of Peace, and she beats up Delum and Karsa easily. She knows something about Karsa's destiny, but will not tell Bairoth about it or he would want to kill Karsa. However, she says that if Karsa dies, the gods will choose another person to fulfill their purpose. Delum is permanently damaged by this encounter.

He stops talking and lives like a dog, even running with them.
3. What does Torvald do that annoys Karsa?

Answer: Talks too much

While Karsa speaks little and to the point, Torvald never shuts up, to the point where others threaten to cut out his tongue. An Arak cuts Torvald's throat, leading Karsa to think he's dead, but Torvald is healed by a Gral.
4. Onrack frees which Tiste Edur, who is banished from his clan in the prologue?

Answer: Trull Sengar

Onrack is curious about why Trull has been banished as a traitor when he claims he betrayed no one, so he smashes the chains binding Trull. The two start traveling together.
5. Karsa joins Sha'ik in Raraku and takes what name?

Answer: Toblakai

Karsa is given the extensive facial tattoos of a slave before escaping the Malazans and joining Sha'ik. It turns out that he was in "Deadhouse Gates", the events of which take place between sections one and two of this book. "House of Chains" starts in year 1159 of Burn's Sleep (which occurs between the prologue and chapter one of "Gardens of the Moon") and then jumps ahead a few years to put us where we were at the end of "Memories of Ice", which takes place concurrently with "Deadhouse Gates". Erikson certainly doesn't mind non-linear narratives!

Though he has a new name, Karsa goes by both names in dialogue and narration.
6. How does Sha'ik react to the news that her brother Ganoes Paran is alive?

Answer: She cries with joy.

She had thought that the only member of her family still alive was her sister Tavore, whom she hates. She lets only Heboric see her joy at knowing that her brother is alive. Tavore was responsible for her sister Felisin being sent as a slave to the otataral mines. Felisin's escape eventually led to her crossing Raraku and being declared Sha'ik reborn.
7. Lostara Yil is trained in what art?

Answer: Shadow Dance

The Shadow Dance is part of the cult of Rashan. Dancers perform for the priests and priestesses, who watch only the shadows, never the dancers. Cotillion says that the Shadow Dance wasn't meant as an actual dance, but as part of assassination.

In "Deadhouse Gates", Lostara is the one who kills elder Sha'ik.
8. In exchange for doing a service for Cotillion, what does Cutter ask?

Answer: For use of the Hound Blind

Cutter wants information about, but Cotillion is reticent about answering, so Cutter wants to call on Blind when he needs help. Looks like he didn't get such a good deal--when he first summons Blind, she only cowers in fear, and Cotillion has to come help Cutter.
9. What happens when Onrack releases two Hounds of Darkness?

Answer: They attack him, tearing off his arm.

There's a lot of characters releasing other characters in this book: the Teblor release Calm, Onrack releases Trull and two Hounds, and Kalam releases azalans. While Onrack can heal most of the injuries the Hounds give him, he can't grow back the arm, which he regrets because it means he can't handle a sword the way he used to.

The wound also cuts him off from the T'lan Imass Ritual, so he is no longer one of them.
10. The members of the House of Chains all display what characteristic?

Answer: Imperfection

Cards for the House of Chains appear in the Deck of Dragons, which Sha'ik and her followers examine, once Paran sanctions it. They notice everyone in the pictures is disfigured in some way: The Crippled God, the Leper, the Cripple, and so forth.
