Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. While traveling through the Imperial Warren, what creature do Lostara and Pearl see aspected to otataral?

Answer: Dragon

The dragon is enclosed in a pocket warren. Dragons are typically aspected to a warren, but the strange thing is that this one is aspected to otataral. Otataral negates magic, while a dragon is a magical creature.
2. What is the Queen of Dreams' real name?

Answer: T'riss

A member of High House Light, the Queen of Dreams has been talked about and sworn by in previous novels, but we don't see her until this book. She is young-looking, with copper hair and grey eyes.
3. Heboric has a vision while drinking hen'bara tea. What does he see in the giant jade statue he envisions?

Answer: Screaming people

For a short time, he joins the screaming mass inside. This vision is not explained in this book. He accidentally dethroned his own god Fener when he touched the jade statue in the desert in "Deadhouse Gates". He then pledges himself to Treach, the new god of war.
4. Why does Karsa say his gods are not worthy to be gods?

Answer: They do not console their worshippers.

The Faces of the Rock, who now serve the Crippled God, always demanded worship and sacrifice, but never gave anything in return. Gods can't just demand worship and death: they have to console their people too, Karsa says. He then destroys 'Siballe, which makes her too imperfect even for the imperfection-loving House of Chains. 'Siballe is still conscious, however, and Karsa carries her around with him for a while; at the end of the book, he hurls her into water, which kills her for good.
5. According to L'oric, what defeats hot iron the vast majority of the time?

Answer: Cold iron

While Sha'ik and her army of the Apocalypse are hot iron, her sister Tavore is cold iron. This means that Tavore is not hot-headed and vengeful, but rather calculating and precise. Tavore had a great interest in the military as a child and would rerun the same battle to see if there were a way the losing side could have won.
6. As she becomes more possessed by the Whirlwind Goddess, Sha'ik neglects whom or what?

Answer: Felisin Younger

While she once cared about the girl who carries her old name, Sha'ik becomes more obsessed with the Whirlwind and the rebellion and forgets Felisin, leading to the girl's mutilation at Bidithal's hands. Sha'ik only realizes what she's doing when she enters Heboric's tent.

The Whirlwind isn't allowed inside, and Sha'ik briefly becomes Felisin again, only to realize that she's forgotten Felisin Younger and that something terrible may have happened to the girl.
7. What part of herself does Apsalar think that Cutter loves?

Answer: The assassin

Apsalar loves the Crokus part of Cutter while thinking that he loves the assassin Apsalar, who was once possessed by Cotillion. Cotillion tells her that Cutter loves every aspect of her, and complies with her wish that he not use Cutter the way he used her.
8. Who kills Bidithal in retribution for what he's done to the girls?

Answer: Karsa

Bidithal has mutilated hundreds of girls and made them his followers. Ber'ok promises Felisin Younger she can kill Bidithal, and for a short time she relishes the idea. However, she quickly loses interest in vengeance, and Karsa carries it out for her in a method too graphic to be described on this site.

He has become the Knight of the House of Chains, the House of a god he doesn't want to serve.
9. How does the fight between Tavore and Felisin turn out?

Answer: Tavore disarms and kills Felisin before the latter can attack.

Sha'ik challenges Tavore to single combat. Unfortunately, the Whirlwind Goddess is killed just before the fight, vanishing from Sha'ik and turning her back into Felisin. Without the Whirlwind, Felisin has no chance against her military-minded sister. Tavore simply disarms her, impales her, and leaves.
10. What comes back to Raraku at the end of "House of Chains"?

Answer: Water

Raraku was once a sea with coastal towns and roads, but has dried out. Occasionally, winds blow sand away, revealing shells, ships, and cities. At the end of the book, the desert is flooded. Raraku (which is spoken of as a conscious entity) reawakens to take itself and its fragment of warren back. So, the desert simply decides to remake itself the way it once was.

As to how the water got there: Raraku's warren (Kurald Emurlahn, shattered Elder Warren of Shadow) had been full of water that characters travel by in "Deadhouse Gates". (Remember the ships with the headless, undead rowers?) When Raraku awakens, the warren opens up and dumps all its water into the desert, making it a sea again. At least, that's my guess: it's not directly stated.
