Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the seven-faced D'ivers that the Nameless Ones release from imprisonment?

Answer: Dejim Nebrahl

Twelve Nameless Ones each invoke a warren to free Dejim. Unfortunately for them, as soon as he's free, he eats all but one of them. Spite, Lady Envy's sister, escapes by turning into a dragon and flying away.
2. Apsalar gains two traveling companions, Curdle and Telorast. What creatures are they?

Answer: Ghosts

They love the world of shadows, so they try to stay out of sunlight and are more active at night. Being an assassin, Apsalar also tends to be awake at night, so they travel well together. The ghosts want bodies again so badly that they take over the skeletons of lizards. Bottle later recognizes the skeletal forms as dragons.
3. What do Curdle and Telorast call Apsalar?

Answer: Not-Apsalar

When Apsalar tells them her name, they first assume she's the ascendant Apsalar, the Lady of Thieves. Much earlier in the series, after her possession by Cotillion is broken, she asks Crokus for a new name, having gone by Sorry before that. He suggests she take a shortened form of Apsalar, Salar, but she likes Apsalar more, even though he thinks it's not right to take the full name of an ascendant.

Not being the "true" Apsalar, Telorast and Curdle call her Not-Apsalar.
4. What does Captain Sort do that makes the Malazan soldiers want to kill her?

Answer: She kills one of their scorpions.

The soldiers are into scorpion fighting, as we saw in "House of Chains". While Bottle is playing around with Joyful Union, Sort purposefully steps on the scorpion. When the other soldiers find out, they want her dead, either as an "accident" or an obvious knife in her back. However, Sort is a capable leader and is instrumental during the siege of Y'Ghatan.
5. Sha'ik is killed in "House of Chains". Who takes over the remaining rebels after her death?

Answer: Leoman

Leoman of the Flails takes control of the remaining rebels and holes up in Y'Ghatan. The Malazans prepare for a siege on the city, but Leoman's got something else planned...
6. Why does Samar Dev not share many of her inventions with the general populace?

Answer: She doesn't want them ill-used.

If she thinks the potential malevolent uses of an object will outweigh its positive ones, then she won't show it to the world. She calls it Dev's First Law of Invention. Oddly, it seems this world doesn't have telescopes, as she invented them and didn't share them. On the other hand, as she notes, when you have magic to do so many things for you, you don't have the incentive to invent as much.
7. The Malaz 14th army attacks Y'Ghatan. What trap do the rebels set for the Malazans?

Answer: They set the city on fire.

Y'Ghatan is known for its enormous quantities of olive oil. The rebels fill the buildings with pipes of olive oil and set them and themselves on fire to defeat the Malazans. Leoman escapes with the help of the Queen of Dreams. I'm not sure this plan would work physics-wise: it's very difficult to light olive oil on fire (the oil's more likely to put the flame out than catch fire), but on the other hand, if it could catch fire, it would be very destructive.
8. Bottle mentally bonds with which creature that helps the army escape from Y'Ghatan?

Answer: A rat

He names her Y'Ghatan. She has several children, which Bottle wants to bring with him when fleeing the city. He says she'll never forgive him if he doesn't save them. Sure enough, he takes them, carrying them in a sling.
9. In "The Bonehunters", Poliel spreads what throughout Seven Cities?

Answer: Disease

She is the Consort of the House of Chains, the Crippled God being the King. She spreads a particularly nasty disease throughout the land: brain-boiling fever and swollen throats that make eating impossible and breathing difficult. Her sister Soliel is an ascendant of healing.
10. The T'lan Imass kill which character halfway through "The Bonehunters"?

Answer: Heboric

After his death, he appears to take on the pain of the humans inside the jade statues. Because of all the characters who have been brought back to life in this series (albeit usually radically altered), I didn't think he was really dead until the end of the book. Speaking of Silverfox, she hasn't been seen since "Memories of Ice".
