Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beginning of the book Gordie, Chris, and Teddy are in the treehouse in the vacant lot. What card game are they playing?

Answer: Three-penny-scat

The three boys are playing three-penny-scat because it was "too hot to play anything more complicated." Gordie describes the card-game as the "dullest ever invented".
2. Gordie fires a gun in the alley behind the Blue Point by accident. Francine Tupper, a waitress known as "Thunderjugs Tupper" by Chris, ran into the alley when she heard the shot. What did she think he had done?

Answer: Shot off a cherry-bomb

Chris "hawked" his dad's forty-five to take with them on the trip.
Since Chris assured him that the gun wasn't loaded, Gordie went ahead and pulled the trigger. He was quite surprised to find out that the gun was indeed loaded. It was a good thing for Gordie that "Thunderjugs Tupper" refused to mar her pretty face by wearing glasses. She had no idea who had made the noise, or what had caused it.
3. Chopper, the feared dump guard-dog, turned out to be what kind of dog?

Answer: Black and white mongrel

There were many rumors about Chopper's breed, which was why Gordie was surprised that he wasn't the red-eyed hellhound of his dreams. Chopper, Milo Pressman's dump guard-dog, was a "medium-sized mongrel dog that was a perfectly common black and white."
4. After Gordie and Vern miss nearly being run down by a train on the GS&WM trestle, all four boys sit down for a refreshment. What do they drink?

Answer: Coke

Gordie picked up the Cokes at the Florida Market while the other boys waited at the dump - all before Chopper and Milo showed up, of course.
After nearly getting creamed by the train, Chris asks if anyone could use a Coke. They all could.
5. After the near miss on the train trestle, Chris asks Gordie to tell a story. Gordie obliges, telling a story called "The Revenge of Lard Ass Hogan." In Gordie's story, a young man, David "Lard Ass" Hogan, enters a pie-eating contest. Prior to the contest, what bottle of liquid does "Lard Ass" Hogan consume?

Answer: Castor oil

David "Lard Ass" Hogan exacted his revenge on his hometown, Gretna, Maine, by drinking 3/4 of a bottle of castor oil before participating in the pie-eating contest. This caused him to vomit, starting a rather funny vomiting domino effect in the crowd. Although Teddy wasn't happy with the ending of the story, Chris really liked it.
Chris was always supportive of Gordie's writing, and Gordie became a novelist as an adult.
6. What brand of cigarettes did Chris steal from his dad for the boys to smoke?

Answer: Winston

Chris "hawked" four Winstons from his old man's dresser. He saves them for after dinner; "when a cigarette tastes best."
7. Chris tells Gordie that by next June, they will be "quits". Why does he say this?

Answer: Because Gordie will be in college courses

Since the boys will be starting junior high that year, it won't be like grammar school. Chris figures that Gordie will be in the college courses and that he, Vern, and Teddy will be in the shop courses. Gordie would, of course, meet better, smarter friends and be done with the three of them.

In their second year of junior high, Chris, with Gordie's support, does enroll in the college courses. He didn't have the support of his family or other friends, but he eventually ended up going to college and enrolling in pre-law.
8. In the morning, when all the boys are asleep but Gordie, what type of animal does he see on the train tracks?

Answer: A deer

While watching the morning come, Gordie sits on the railroad tracks. He sees a white-tailed deer who pays him no mind, but starts foraging. She is frightened off by the train, which wakes up the other boys.
9. When Ace and his friends find the boys at the site of the body, Gordie tells Ace something that makes him very angry. In response, Ace tells his friends not to hurt anyone but Gordie. What does Ace say he is going to do to Gordie?

Answer: Break both his arms

When Ace says that he is going to break both of Gordie's arms, Gordie believes with all his heart that Ace absolutley meant it. Chris saves the day by shooting off his father's gun and running off Ace and his thug friends.
10. Once the boys split up and Gordie gets back to his house he makes himself some food. What does he eat?

Answer: Eggs and a side dish of crushed pineapple

Gordie scrambles himself a half-dozen eggs and eats them with a side of crushed pineapple. An odd combo in my book.
