Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This actress appeared in "The Last King Of Scotland" (2006) and "Johnny English Reborn (2011) and has co-authored three books in the "EarthEnd Saga" fantasy series. Who is she?

Answer: Gillian Anderson

Anderson was co-author of this series with Jeff Rovin, who has written many books, including several best selling novels as well as biographies of Joan Collins, Charlton Heston and Jackie Chan. Anderson is best known for her portrayal of Dana Scully in the long-running TV show "The X Files".

In "A Vision Of Fire", the first in the "EarthEnd" trilogy, a child psychologist tries to uncover the supernatural links between an Indian girl speaking in tongues, a student from Haiti drowning on dry land and an Iranian boy setting himself on fire. Antony Jones on the website "sfbook.com" reviewed the book as "not thrilling enough to be a thriller and doesn't have enough fantastic or horrific elements to feel like a genre novel.

The actual idea of the story is a good one, it just hasn't been as realised as well as it could have. An ok read and nothing more."
2. Which ex football player, who played over 650 games for Gillingham, Norwich City and Manchester United, was responsible for the trilogy of crime novels entitled "Striker!", "Sweeper!" and "Defender!"?

Answer: Steve Bruce

Bruce wrote the books, about fictional football manager Steve Barnes, after retiring from playing and taking up management. All three books were written and published in 1999 while he was manager of Huddersfield Town and the plots cover events such as the murder of a star player and the kidnapping of a club janitor, complete with Irish terrorists, rogue Mossad agents, several kidnappings and a sniper, all within a football setting. Bruce himself, when asked why he hadn't written more replied, "Have you read them? Go and read them and you'll understand why." The poor level of writing, combined with Bruce's celebrity, however, means that the books are sought-after collectors items, regularly changing hands for prices in excess of £100 each.
3. Which commercial pilot, radio presenter, international fencer and rock vocalist somehow still had time, in 1990, to write the comic novel "The Adventures of Lord Iffy Boatrace"?

Answer: Bruce Dickinson

Dickinson has been frontman for Iron Maiden since 1981, apart from a brief time as a solo artist between 1993 and 1999, recording tracks such as "Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter" (1990), "Flight Of Icarus" (1983) and "Can I Play With Madness" (1988) with the band.

He was at one point ranked number seven in GB fencing, and has been flying since the 1990s. This secondary career has led to some flights which made national news such as, in 2006, flying 200 UK citizens caught in the Israel/Hezbollah conflict back from Lebanon; and when XL Airways UK ceased trading in 2008, he flew 180 stranded holiday makers back to UK from Egypt. "The Adventures of Lord Iffy Boatrace" is about a semi-transvestite English upper-class landowner, and was described by Q magazine as, "The shock is not that Bruce is unlikely to be up for a Booker with his first novel, but how very bad it is compared to the worst piece of fiction this reviewer has ever encountered".
4. In 1998, Uma Thurman married the actor that played Todd Anderson in "Dead Poets Society" (1989) and authored the novel "The Hottest State" (1996). Who became Mr. Thurman?

Answer: Ethan Hawke

The marriage between Hawke and Thurman didn't last and they were separated by 2003 and divorced by 2005, by which time Hawke had another novel out, "Ash Wednesday" (2002). Many critics agreed that "Ash Wednesday" was an improvement on "The Hottest State", although maybe that wasn't too difficult when the first one attracted reviews such as "This clumsily written novel takes itself very seriously, skip the movie, if there is one" from Kirkus.

There was indeed a movie of the same name, released in 2006, written by, directed by and starring Hawke, which the San Francisco Chronicle described as "feeling self absorbed" with "lead characters so callow that you finally don't care much about them."
5. Based on her 1971 song of the same name, which country star published "Coat Of Many Colors" in 1994?

Answer: Dolly Parton

"Coat Of Many Colors" is a children's book which attracted generally favourable reviews on publication and recounts a story of poverty from Parton's own childhood with a bit of Biblical parable thrown in. Dolly has also published the children's book "I Am A Rainbow" (2009) and in the mid 1980s started Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, a literacy programme which mails a book a month to enrolled kids in USA, UK, Canada and Australia.

In 2018, she was honoured by the Library of Congress as the charity sent out its 100 millionth book.
6. Her first book was "Sex" in 1992, and she followed this with "The English Roses" in 2003, which became the fastest-selling children's picture book of all time. Who is this musical icon?

Answer: Madonna

Between 2003 and 2005, Madonna wrote five books for children, following "The English Roses" with "Mr. Peabody's Apples" (2003), "Yakov and the Seven Thieves" (2004), "The Adventures of Abdi" (2004) and "Lotsa de Casha" (2005). The books have all been praised for their story and quality of writing, and ratings on "goodreads.com" are between 3.6 and 4.1 out of five.
7. Winner of a Best Actor Oscar in 2003 for "Mystic River" and again in 2008 for "Milk", who wrote the novel "Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff" in 2018?

Answer: Sean Penn

When "Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff" was published, Penn announced that he was ready to turn his back on movies in order to concentrate on writing full time, but judging by some of the reviews that may not be a wise move. "The Guardian" called the novel "repellent and stupid on so many levels" and continued the review by stating, "Penn doesn't just swing and miss with his ambitious vocabulary; he swings and cracks a hole in reality as we know it, leaving us all unsure of the concept of a good sentence, how a novel should be structured and generally what makes sense any more."
8. Set in the village of Katchem-by-the-Throat, which comedian wrote the children's vampire books "The Reluctant Vampire" (1982) and "The Vampire's Revenge" (1983)?

Answer: Eric Morecambe

Morecambe had written an adult novel previously, 1981's "Mr. Lonely", about a comedian who hits the big time, before turning his hand to kids' fiction with these books. They tell the story of the village in the land of Gotcha, where the Gots are still ruled by vampires, currently King Victor and Queen Valeeta, and their sons Vernon and Valentine, who would rather have chips and red wine than blood.
9. Who won the Grammy for best Bluegrass album in 2010, was placed sixth by Comedy Central in the 100 greatest stand-up comics in 2004 and in 2000 released his first novel, "Shopgirl"?

Answer: Steve Martin

Martin has always been a talented banjo player, but until the release of his 2010 album, it had taken a back seat to his acting, which includes roles in movies such as "The Jerk"(1979), "Little Shop of Horrors" (1986) and "Parenthood" (1989). He has also written several novels since "Shopgirl", which was made into a movie in 2005, starring Martin and Claire Danes.

The novel met with mostly favourable reviews, with "Publisher's Weekly" stating, "Martin's first novel is finally neither a triumph nor a disaster: it's yet another of this intelligent performer's attempts to expand his range, and those who will buy it for the name on the cover could do a lot worse."
10. Author of the book "Postcards From The Edge" (1987), which actress will always be known as Princess Leia from the 1977 movie "Star Wars"?

Answer: Carrie Fisher

"Star Wars" is the movie Fisher will always be associated with, but she also appeared in classic movies such as "The Blues Brothers" (1980) and "Hannah And Her Sisters" (1986). "Postcards From The Edge" was a semi autobiographical novel about an actress who is trying to get her life back on track after a drugs overdose. "The L.A. Times" reviewed it as "intelligent, original, focused, insightful, very interesting to read", while Kirkus declared it "entertaining, often exhilarating."
