Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What kind of people were Sir Walter Elliot and his daughters Elizabeth and Mary?

Answer: proud, self-centred and extravagant

At the beginning of 'Persuasion' the Elliot family are having to leave Kellynch Hall because of Sir Walter Elliot's debts. He, and his eldest daughter, feel they must maintain the standard of living appropriate for a baronet at all costs. The world must still be impressed by the Elliots of Kellynch Hall.
2. Who is Lady Russell?

Answer: Anne Elliot's godmother

Lady Russell lives close to Kellynch Hall and was the closest friend of Lady Elliot. After Lady Elliot dies, Lady Russell tries to look after Lady Elliot's three daughters. Elizabeth ignores her advice, and Mary marries a match considered suitable for an Elliot of Kellynch Hall. Anne Elliot cares about her and listens to her.
3. How old was Anne Elliot when she first fell in love with Frederick Wentworth?

Answer: 19

Frederick Wentworth had just started his naval career and was staying with his brother, Edward, a curate in the area. Frederick Wentworth wanted to marry Anne Elliot but she was persuaded to refuse him by Lady Russell. Lady Russell did not consider that an insolvent young seaman was a suitable match for an Elliot of Kellynch Hall.
4. Why does Anne Elliot not go to Bath with her father and sister?

Answer: Her younger sister, Mary, is supposed to be ill.

Mary Elliot is married to Charles Musgrove, whose family lives at Uppercross. Charles and Mary live nearby. Mary is like her father and eldest sister, has all the Elliot pride and must be the centre of attention. Anne hates Bath and is a great favourite of the rest of the Musgrove family, so the visit is a welcome change.
5. Why does Captain Wentworth return to the area?

Answer: To stay with his sister

Admiral and Mrs Croft have rented Kellynch Hall from Sir Walter Elliot. Sophy Croft is Frederick Wentworth's sister. Admiral Croft and Frederick Wentworth have just paid off ships after the Battle of Trafalgar.
6. Why are the Musgrove family so eager to meet Captain Wentworth?

Answer: Their son was a midshipman on his ship.

Richard Musgrove - who died at sea - was a midshipman on the Laconia, Captain Wentworth's ship, for six months. The only letters his mother ever received from him were written during that period, and must have been written under Captain Wentworth's influence.
7. Why do the Musgrove family, Captain Wentworth and Anne Elliot visit Lyme?

Answer: To visit Captain Wentworth's friend

Captain Wentworth's friend, Captain Harville, was injured in the Battle of Trafalgar and is recuperating in Lyme with his family.
8. How is Louisa Musgrove injured?

Answer: She jumps from the sea wall.

Captain Wentworth has told Louisa that he only basically admires strong and self-confident women. Louisa is trying to impress him with her strength and determination, and asks him to catch her when she jumps. He does not catch her in time and she hits her head on the stone jetty.
9. Who is the heir to Kellynch Hall?

Answer: Mr William Elliot

As Sir Walter Elliot has no sons, his nephew Mr William Elliot must inherit. Some years earlier, Mr Elliot insulted Sir Walter and Elizabeth Elliot by marrying a rich lady who Sir Walter did not consider to be a suitable match for an Elliot of Kellynch Hall. Mr Elliot's wife died however, and he decided to resume contact with his family.
10. Who does Anne Elliot marry?

Answer: Captain Wentworth

Lady Russell wants Anne Elliot to marry Mr Elliot so that she can return to Kellynch Hall eventually. Anne neither trusts nor likes Mr Elliot, and finds out that he has run out of money and wants to stop Sir Walter Elliot from marrying again and fathering an heir. She finally ignores Lady Russell's advice and marries Captain Wentworth, who is now rich and solvent.
