Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are three Wentworths, Frederick, Edward, and a sister. Who is the sister?

Answer: Mrs. Croft

Mrs. Croft is Frederick and Edward's sister. She is married to Admiral Croft. They have rented Kellynch Hall from Sir Walter Elliot.
2. In which year did Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth FIRST become engaged?

Answer: 1806

They first became engaged in 1806 when he was without a ship. He was staying with his brother. That engagement was broken off the same year.
3. Edward Wentworth is a clergyman. What is the name of his living?

Answer: Monkford

Frederick goes to stay with him after the episode at Lyme.
4. The book mentions two of the ships that Captain Wentworth commanded. What were they?

Answer: Laconia and Asp

The Victory was Horatio Nelson's flagship at the battle of Trafalgar. The Golden Hind was Drake's ship, and the Hotspur was one of Horatio Hornblower's (in the C. S. Forester novels).
5. Two members of the Wentworth family (counting in-laws) are connected with the navy. One of them is Captain Wentworth. Who is the other?

Answer: Admiral Croft

Captain Harville and Captain Benwick are two of Captain Wentworth's friends. They are the ones Captain Wentworth goes to visit in Lyme. Captain Bigden is someone Admiral Croft sees when he is walking with Anne in Bath.
6. What is Captain Wentworth's sister's first name?

Answer: Sophia or Sophy

Penelope is Mrs. Clay's first name, Henrietta is one of the Musgrove sisters, and Mary is Anne's sister's name.
7. Which person (other than Anne) did Captain Wentworth have a prior connection to?

Answer: Dick Musgrove

Dick was a midshipman on Captain Wentworth's ship, the Laconia. Captain Wentworth made Dick write home, which was more than anyone else did.
8. At the end of the novel, why do Sir Walter and Elizabeth acknowledge Captain Wentworth?

Answer: He has made money and risen high in his profession

They do not like him, but he has 25,000 pounds. Besides which, he is the brother-in-law of an admiral. It also helps that Admiral Croft is their tenant.
9. Who else could Captain Wentworth possibly have courted?

Answer: Henrietta Musgrove

He might have been pursuing Henrietta and Louisa Musgrove (at different times), although there is some ambiguity about that.
10. And last, a give away question. Why did Captain Wentworth go to Bath?

Answer: To see Anne

In The Letter he says: "You alone have brought me to Bath. For you alone I think and plan." Ahh, how sweet!
