Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Name the heroine that loves each hero: From "The Velvet Promise," Gavin Montgomery?

Answer: Judith Revedoune

Judith was known to many as the Revedoune heiress before she married Gavin. Did you know that the Velvet series is known as Velvet because "The Velvet Promise" was next on a list of prospective book titles at the publishing house. Jude had not chosen a title for it until then. After that the other three had to be "Velvet" something.
2. From "The Raider," Alexander Montgomery?

Answer: Jessica Taggert

Thus the beginning of the inter-weaving of Jude's two powerhouse families. As Sam said in "Sweet Liar," I'd have an affair with a Montgomery, but I'd rather marry a Taggert. That's not a direct quote, but the sentiment is there.
3. From "Twin of Ice" Kane Taggert? [not the only Jude hero by that name]

Answer: Houston Chandler

This was my first Jude book, and I love how it and "Twin of Fire" tell about the same events with such completely different perspecitve. The other Kane Taggert that plays significantly in a Jude book is his great-great-etc. grandson, who is the hero of "The Matchmakers," one of the three novellas published as "The Invitation." Modern-day Kane is also featured in "Sweet Liar" since he is Michael's twin brother.
4. From "The Matchmakers," Kane Taggert? [I told you there was more than one.]

Answer: Cale Anderson

Cale is possibly my favorite Jude heroine. This is one of the few times that she writes a story in first person. I think that's why I like it so much. "The Matchmakers," though short, is one of my favorites and definitely the best part about "The Invitation."
5. From "Just Curious," McAllister J. Taggert

Answer: Karen Lawrence

"Just Curious" was first published in the Christmas anthology "A Gift of Love" and later as a part of "Simple Gifts." Mac is a brother to Michael ("Sweet Liar"), Kane ("The Matchmakers"), and Frank "Change of Heart").
6. From "A Knight in Shining Armor," Dougless Montgomery? [I know I switched from hero to heroine with this one, but variety is the spice of life.]

Answer: Nicholas Stafford

I consider Nicholas to be the correct answer to this question because he is the true hero of the book, even though Reed is the one who gets the girl in the end. Arguably, they are the same person anyway. Incidentally, Dougless is the granddaughter of a Jude couple: Hank and Amanada Montgomery of "The Awakening."
7. From "Counterfeit Lady," Nicole Courtalain?

Answer: Clayton Armstrong

Clay is one of those heroes that I want to hit until he gets his act together. In the end, I love him, and I'm glad to meet him again in "Lost Lady" and "River Lady."
8. In "The Awakening," Amanda Caulden?

Answer: Hank Montgomery

Hank is one of my favorite Montgomery men. Who am I kidding? I love them all.
9. From "Eternity," Carrie Montgomery? (His real name)

Answer: Joshua Templeton

His real name is Joshua Templeton though Carrie originally meets him as Joshua Greene. The kids really make this book, but I'm not sure that I'd want them around if I was trying to fall in love with someone.
10. From "The Black Lyon," Lyonene?

Answer: Ranulf de Warbrooke

The grandaddy of them all. Lyonene and Ranulf's oldest son is Montgomery [from which all our favorites are descended]. Gavin tells Raine in "Velvet Song" that he is like Ranulf, and Alyxandria, Raine's wife, owns the Lion belt that Ranulf had given Lyonene. Confusing fact: The book title is spelled Lyon (like the heroine's name--Lyonene), but the hero's nickname is spelled Lion (like the animal).
11. Now name the book for this couple: Rowan and Jura?

Answer: The Maiden

Significant in the grand scheme for two reasons: 1) Montgomery (the son of Ranulf and Lyonene) is Rowan's squire. 2) It introduces Jude's fake country of Laconia, which she'll revisit in "The Princess." In fact, one of Princess Aria's many names is Jura.
12. Rogan Peregrine and Liana Neville?

Answer: The Taming

Rogan could drive a sane person crazy, but Liana whips him into shape finally.
13. Tearle Howard and Zared Peregrine?

Answer: The Conquest

A continuation of the feud introduced in "The Taming." Jude revisits the "girl disguising as boy" routine of "Velvet Song."
14. Callasandra/Catherine Tavistock/Hayden Lane and Talis/Adam Tavistock (Tavey)/Tariz/Jamie?

Answer: Remembrance

This book is fascinating. Large portions of it are written in first person (Jude should really do that more often), and there all these amazing characters that change but don't change across the centuries.
15. Wesley Stanford and Leah Simmons?

Answer: River Lady

Wesley is my favorite of the James River men. This book not only revisits characters from Counterfiet and Lost Ladies, but we also meet up with Devon and Linnet Macalister from "Sweetbriar."
I think it's intersting that "Knight"'s Reed Stanford is from Virginia just like these Stanfords. Coincidence? I think not. Everyone's connected in Jude Deveraux land.
16. Michael Taggert and Samantha Elliott?

Answer: Sweet Liar

I think this one is my favorite. I love all the Taggerts, but Michael is the best. He and Sam have that great banter throughout the book, and the mystery of Sam's grandmother is played out well. I always think Jude's historical novels are her best, until I re-read this one.
17. Christopher Hring Montgomery and Madeleine Worth (LaReina)?

Answer: Mountain Laurel

'Ring is classic Montgomery. He's also the brother of Carrie from "Eternity" and the father of Jocelin (Jace) of "Wishes." His life is also saved at a point in "Mountain Laurel" by one the Christianas--certain Montgomery daughters who have "second sight." It's interesting how this works out since the original Christiana was not a Montgomery at all.

She married Roger Chatworth in the epilogue of "Velvet Angel," but if memory serves, Roger and Christiana's daughter did marry a Montgomery. I suppose that's how the gift became a Montgomery trait that they pass down like blue eyes, heighth, and the name Kit.
18. Samuel Dysan III (Tynan) and Christiana Mathison?

Answer: The Temptress

This Christiana is one of those second-sighted Montgomerys even though Montgomery is not her name. Her mother [who was a Montgomery] renamed her daughter after she saved a church-full of people from a fire before the fire happened. She may also be the Christiana that saved 'Hring in "Mountain Laurel," but I'm not certain of that. Tynan is the hero's name until the end of the book when they discover that is actually the long-lost grandson of one of the charcters, making him Samuel Dysan III.
19. Jamie Montgomery & Axia Maidenhall?

Answer: The Heiress

There are so many Jamies in Jude's works, but this is the only one who gets the lime-light. I love this story for many reasons, not the least of which is Jamie's sisters, especially the beautiful and blind Berengaria.
20. John Richmond Montgomery/Earl of Trevelyan/11th Duke of MacArran/Captain Frank Baker and Claire Willoughby? [I'm sorry that I couldn't resist using all his names and titles.]

Answer: The Duchess

Vellie/Trevelyan/Frank is one of my favorites. He and Claire talk so much about the important stuff, and he actually listens. Who would not be in love with a man who listens? Plus it's nice to see that the Montgomery/MacArrans of "Highland Velvet" are alive and well (though very different from their Scottish ancestors).
21. Okay it's time to move on to children. Which of the children of Miles Montgomery accompanies Miles and Elizabeth to Scotland in "Velvet Angel"?

Answer: Christopher Gavin

Two comments here: 1) Miles was nothing, if not fertile. The Nicholas referred to in this question was his fifth known illegitimate child (the four listed here as well as a daugheter). Eventually, he would make an honest woman of that particular mother, Elizabeth Chatworth. 2) Christopher Gavin is perhaps the original Kit in a long line of supporting Montgomery characters. Alex ("The Raider") has a brother Kit. 'Hring's ("Mountain Laurel") and Carrie's ("Eternity") father is Kit (possibly the same person). J.T. (Jarl Tynan Montgomery of "The Princess") also has a brother named Kit, and Michael and Samantha of "Sweet Liar" make use of a modern-day Kit Montgomery's extensive car collection. Nicholas Stafford of "Knight" also has a brother Kit, though he's not a Montgomery.
22. There are plenty of Jude couples who get separated while the unsuspecting heroine is pregnant. When the couple gets back together, there is the inevitible "Where'd this kid come from?" situation that must be resolved, but the precious little darling (who, after all, is perfect because of his/her perfect couple parents) usually ends up helping our couple get back on track. With that in mind, name the child of each couple that appears in the book. From "Velvet Song," Raine and Alyx's daughter?

Answer: Catherine

Little Catherine saves her parents' marriage. After they get married, Raine leaves Alyx with Gavin and Judith, and it appears that he's going to ignore her forever. Alyx sends Catherine to her father on a sort of diplomatic mission. Raine can't resist his daughter (or her mother).
23. From "Sweetbriar," Devon and Linnet's daughter?

Answer: Miranda

When Devon shows up in Spring Creek where the "widow" Linnet is a school teacher, it's obvious to everyone that he is the father of Miranda, and he proves it by saving her from the burning school when no one else will attempt it. The fact that he's not dead causes some trouble for them with the "too evil to be true" people of Spring Creek.

When I read River Lady (before "Sweetbriar"), I thought there was more going on with the Macalisters that I should know about. I should have recognized the "I've already written about these people, and they're special to me" treatment that Jude gives characters who pop up in multiple books.

It all came into focus when I later read Sweetbriar. This is why Jude is so addictive. If you read long enough, you'll meet all the characters you love again and again.
24. From "The Enchanted Land," Seth and Morgan's son?

Answer: Adam

Through a series of unfortuante events, Morgan and Seth are separated before she can tell him that she is pregnant with Adam. This will cause some problems when they find each other again. Later Adam's sudden and serious illness almost tears them apart again.
25. From "Lost Lady," Travis and Regan's daughter?

Answer: Jennifer

Regan is tricked into running away from Travis while she is pregnant, but Travis finds his daughter a handy tool and a willing participant in his plans to win Regan back once he finds them again.
