Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the number of people in the Fellowship times three?

Answer: 27

There are nine members of the Fellowship: Gandalf, Frodo, Aragorn, Boromir, Legolas, Gimli, Sam, Merry and Pippin. Each free race of Middle-Earth is supposed to be represented by a member(s) of the Fellowship of the Ring: Aragorn and Boromir for the race of Men; Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin for the Hobbits; Gandalf for the wizards (if you can call them a race of Middle-Earth. You could say he represents the Valar and the Maiar); Gimli for the Dwarves; and Legolas for the Elves.
2. What is the number of Silmarils minus the number of wizards sent to Middle-Earth squared? [(#Silmarils-#wizards)^2]

Answer: 4

Feanor created three Silmarils and there were five wizards, so you have -2. Anything squared is always positive (except 0), so two squared is four.

The Silmarils are in the air, sea, and fires of the earth. The one in the sky is carried by Earendil. The other two were stolen by the surviving sons of Feanor after the War of Wrath. They burned in their hands because of the kinslayings, so Maglor threw his into sea and Maedhros cast himself, along with the Silmaril, into a gaping chasm filled with fire.

The five wizards are Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast, Alatar, and Pallando. They were sent by the Valar to help the free peoples of Middle-Earth in their battle against Sauron.
3. What is the number of sons of Finwe plus the number of the sons of Feanor plus the number of children of Fingolfin (as given in "The Silmarillion") plus the number of the children of Finarfin?

Answer: 18

Finwe's sons were Feanor, Fingolfin, and Finarfin. Feanor's sons were Maglor, Maedhros, Curufin, Celegorm, Caranthir, Amrod, and Amras. Fingolfin's children were Turgon, Aredhel, and Fingon. Finafin's children were Finrod (also known as Felagund), Galadriel, Orodreth, Angrod, and Aegnor. (Tolkien later adjusted the genealogy to have Orodreth shown as Angrod's son rather than his brother.) So, 3+7+3+5=18.

Finwe's children weren't all brothers. Fingolfin and Finarfin were Feanor's half-brothers because they had different mothers. Feanor, the oldest, was born of Miriel. But she gave most of her spirit to Feanor and died of world-weariness. Then Finwe had Fingolfin and Finarfin with Indis. Feanor never really accepted Indis as his mother after Miriel died, and so he didn't get along with Fingolfin and Finarfin.

Fingon's son was Gil-galad, who would later on in the second age be high-king of the Noldor and die battling with Sauron. Turgon was king of Gondolin, the hidden city. Aredhel was sort of forced to marry Eol when she was riding by his woods. She died when protecting Maeglin, her son and later traitor of Gondolin, from Eol who tried to kill him in Gondolin.

Finrod was called Felagund when he befriended Beor the Old in Ossiriand. He later helped Beren in his quest for a Silmaril by sacrificing himself in Sauron's dungeon. Angrod and Aegnor didn't seem to do much important stuff. Galadriel married Celeborn and they became the leaders of Lothlorien during the War of the Ring. Galadriel possessed an elven ring of power, Nenya.

Most of these people were involved in the rebellion of the Noldor. The exceptions were Finwe, who was killed by Morgoth and Finarfin, who became king of the Noldor in Aman.
4. What is the number of LOTR movies (not including animated versions) divided by the number of children of Hurin squared? [(#LOTR movies)/((#Hurin's children)^2)] (Remember to simplify)

Answer: 1/3

There were of course, three movies: 'The Fellowship of the Ring,' 'The Two Towers,' and 'The Return of the King.' Hurin had three children: Turin, Laliath, and Nienor. Three squared is nine. 3/9 simplified is 1/3.

Laliath was barely mentioned in the "Silmarillion", but she was in the "Unfinished Tales". She and Turin got sick because of the Evil Breath that came from Morgoth, presumably. Turin survived, but Laliath died.
5. What is the number of outlaws there were in the woodlands south of Teiglin before Turin joined them divided by two?

Answer: 25

The 'Unfinished Tales' says there were about fifty men in the band wandering beyond the western marches of Doriath. Turin threw a stone at an archer among them who fired at him and broke his skull. Turin took that man's place. Turin then killed their leader, Forweg, when he was chasing a woman.

They then took Turin as their captain and he remained so until Mim the petty dwarf turned the outlaws over to the orcs and they were all killed except Turin and Beleg.
6. What is the value for x in the equation x=4y-7, if y=the number of Battles of Beleriand (not including the War of Wrath)?

Answer: 13

There were five Wars of Beleriand (also called the Wars of the Jewels): the First Battle (does it have a name?), the Battle-under-stars (Dagor-nuin-Giliath), the Glorious Battle (Dagor Aglareb), the Battle of Sudden Flame (Dagor Bragollach), and the Battle of Unnumbered Tears (Nirnaeth Arnoediad).

A lot could be said about these battles, so I'll just say a little about each. The First Battle was fought before the return of the Noldor by the Sindar, shortly after the return of Morgoth from his imprisonment in Valinor. The Second Battle was fought by the house of Feanor against the balrogs of Morgoth. In this battle, Feanor was killed. The Third Battle was fought by the people of Fingolfin and Maedhros on the plains of Ard-galen. In the Fourth Battle, Morgoth sent forth great rivers of flame and deadly flames. In the Fifth Battle, the forces of the sons of Feanor, a few from Nargothrond, the Naugrim, the Men of Bor and Ulfang, the host of Fingon, and the Men of Hador. The first, fourth, and fifth were lost by the enemies of Morgoth.
7. Take the number of letters in the elvish name of Gandalf and add five. What number do you get?

Answer: 15

Just like everything in Tolkien's works, Gandalf has a lot of different names. Mithrandir is what the Elves call him. The name given to Gandalf in the south is Incanus. Tharkun, meaning "staff man," is what the Dwarves call him. Anyway, Mithrandir has 10 letters plus five is 15.
8. What is the year J.R.R. Tolkien died plus 1555?

Answer: 3528

Tolkien was born on January 3, 1892 and died on September 2, 1973 with many of his works unfinished. He was a great linguist and philogist, two things that made him a great author as well. 1973 plus 1555 equals 3528.
9. If y=x/4, and x=the number of ruling kings and queens of Numenor (according to Appendix B of "LOTR"), what is the value for y?

Answer: 6

There were 25 kings and queens of Numenor. There were only three ruling queens: Tar-Ancalime, Tar-Telperian, and Tar-Vanimelde. In the "Unfinished Tales", Tar-Calmacil (Ar-Belzagar) was the first king given with an Andunaic name.
10. 1) Take the square root of the number of Ringwraiths. 2) Add this to the number of Gates of Gondolin minus one. 3) Add this to the number of groups of Elves that left Cuivienen plus one squared. What is the square root of this number? SQR[SQR(#ringwraiths)+(#Gates of Gondonlin)+(#Elvish groups+1)^2]

Answer: 5

There were nine Ringwraiths, and the square root of nine is three. There are seven Gates of Gondolin minus one is six. Three plus six is nine. Three groups left Cuivienen, plus one is four. Four squared is 16. 16+9=25. The square root of 25 is five.

The first group to leave Cuivienen on the Great Journey was the smallest group, the Vanyar, headed by Ingwe. The second group, the Noldor, bigger than the Vanyar, was headed by Finwe. The third group, the Teleri, the largest group, was headed by Elwe. The leader of each group was taken by the Valar and were the Blessed Realm.
The nine Ringwraiths used to be kings of men, and were given rings of power. Sauron used his ruling ring to put them under his control.

Everyone thought Gondolin would be in the south to be farther away from Morgoth, but it was actually in the north.
