Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The main character of the book was Quentin Jacobsen, or simply Q. In what city did he live?

Answer: Orlando, Florida

Q lived in the fictional subdivision of Jefferson Park in Orlando, Florida. He was an average teenage boy. He did well in school; he hung out with his friends, Ben and Radar; he played video games; and he was kind of in love with the amazing enigma that was Margo Roth Spiegelman.
2. The book began with a flashback during which young Q and his neighbor, Margo Roth Spiegelman, found what in a nearby park?

Answer: a dead body

One day, the two kids rode their bikes to the park only to find a dead body slumped against a tree. Margo became very interested in the case and did some investigating. It turned out the man was Robert Joyner, and he had killed himself.
3. About a month before Q was to graduate from high school, Margo sneaked into his room and took him out on a revenge mission. Which of the following people did Margo NOT leave a dead fish for?

Answer: Karin

When Margo found out her boyfriend, Jase, was cheating on her with her best friend, Becca, she decided to seek revenge. She convinced Q to join her on her mission, mostly as a getaway driver. First, they went to the store and bought supplies, including Vaseline, a blow horn, spray paint, hair removal cream, and catfish. They then went to both Becca and Jase's houses where Margo left a fish and a spray painted M. Then, they left the same things for Lacey in her car. Margo was mad at Lacey for not telling her about what Becca and Jase were doing.

She left a bouquet of flowers for Karin because she was the one who had told her about Jase and Becca.
4. After Margo had her revenge, she let Q choose the next victim, Chuck Parson. What did they do to him?

Answer: removed one of his eyebrows

They sneaked into Chuck's bedroom and covered one eyebrow with the hair removal cream they had bought earlier. They then went through his house and put Vaseline on the door handles and windows so it would be hard for anyone to come after them. When they pulled his eyebrow off, Chuck woke and they ran out to the van.
5. Which of these places did Q and Margo sneak into the night they took revenge?

Answer: SeaWorld

After all the revenge, Margo and Q went to SeaWorld to break in. To get in, they swam through a drainage ditch and climbed a fence. Once inside, a security guard found them, but because his shift was almost over, he let them go. Q and Margo danced to the music that was playing in the park before leaving.
6. After their night of adventure, Margo disappeared and Q was left to search for her. What was the first clue he found?

Answer: a poster in her window

When Q noticed a poster of folk singer Woody Guthrie in Margo's window that wasn't there before, he thought it was a clue meant for him. He, Ben, and Radar got Margo's little sister, Ruthie, to let them into her house and they investigated her room. There, they found hundreds of vinyl records, one of which was a Woody Guthrie album. On the back of it, one song, "Walt Whitman's Niece", was circled.

This led them to a book of poetry by Walt Whitman, "Leaves of Grass", on Margo's bookshelf.
7. What Walt Whitman poem did Q read and reread throughout the book?

Answer: Song of Myself

"Song of Myself" was one of the poems in "Leaves of Grass". Margo had highlighted a lot of it. Q read the poem multiple times throughout the novel trying to get into Margo's mindset and learn more about her.
8. Where did Q find a note from Margo with an address on it?

Answer: in the hinges of his bedroom door

Inspired by one of the highlighted lines from "Song of Myself", Q unhinged his bedroom door and found a scrap of paper. On it was an address for an abandoned strip mall. He and his friends went to it a few times looking for clues about Margo's whereabouts. They found a spray painted message that mentioned "paper towns" among other things that eventually led to finding her.
9. Who did Ben start to date in the book?

Answer: Lacey

Lacey was a popular girl at their school and was one of Margo's friends. Even though she was one of the people Margo left a dead fish for, Lacey felt bad and missed Margo. She also helped Q look for Margo. She and Ben went to prom together and started to date. Radar was dating Angela.
10. Eventually, Q discovered where Margo had gone, and he and his friends skipped graduation to take a road trip up to New York. What was the name of the paper town where they finally found Margo?

Answer: Agloe

Q finally learned that a paper town was a copyright trap used by mapmakers. Then, he found a comment on Omnictionary, a fictional Wikipedia-like website, on a page for Agloe, New York, which was a paper town that had been made real when someone had built a general store there. Because of the comment's unconventional capitalization, Q knew it was Margo who had made it. After that, Q, Ben, Radar, and Lacey skipped their graduation to drive up to Agloe. The comment Margo left said the time she would be leaving Agloe, and the group only had just under a day to get there in time. They drove over the speed limit and only stopped for short calculated times to get gas and food. When they made it to Algoe, they found Margo in the rundown store. It turned out she had never actually wanted them to come to her. The book ended with the Q and Margo kissing and saying goodbye before they went their separate ways.

Basically, the moral of the story was that it is impossible to ever really, truly know another person and that you shouldn't think you know someone without enough information.
