Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one of these men is NOT most closely linked to the Montague side: Balthasar, Tybalt, or Mercutio?

Answer: Tybalt

Balthasar was Romeo's servant, who told Romeo that he had seen Juliet's funeral. Mercutio is Romeo's friend who jokes a lot and is therefore never taken seriously. So, when Mercutio is stabbed by Tybalt, everyone thinks he's joking. Tybalt is Juliet's cousin who accidentally killed Mercutio. Romeo then got revenge and killed Tybalt.
2. At the beginning of this tragic tale, who is the girl that Romeo is "love sick" over?

Answer: Rosaline

In the beginning, Romeo has not yet met Juliet. He is in a relationship with Rosaline, but Rosaline doesn't love him. Once he goes to the party at the Capulet's house, he then meets Juliet. The answer cannot be Juliet's sister because Juliet is an only child.
3. How soon do Romeo and Juliet fall in love?

Answer: love at first sight

Romeo goes to the party held at the Capulet's household and sees Juliet. And Juliet sees Romeo. They immediately fall in love, say a couple of words and kiss.
4. How soon do they get married?

Answer: the next day

Romeo finds himself, while walking out in the dark, at Juliet's balcony. He hears her talking to herself about him. This is where she says the famous line... "What's in a name? That which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet." Meaning, that you could give Romeo a different name but he'd still be Romeo just like you could give a rose another name but it still would be a rose.

He shows himself and they tell each other their feelings and decide to get married the next day at 9:00. Way too sudden if you ask me!
5. To whom do Romeo and Juliet go to get married?

Answer: Friar Lawrence

Friar Lawrence thinks that if Juliet and Romeo get married it will stop the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets, even though they just met the day before and were really young and foolish.
6. Why is there a feud between the Montagues and Capulets?

Answer: no one really knows

The feud between the Montagues and the Capulets has been going on for such a long time that people have forgotten what really started it. Also whether the Montagues are at fault or the Capulets. It's sad that Romeo and Juliet love one another, but their families are enemies. This complicates their love because they have to do everything in secret.
7. After getting married, Romeo tries to stop a fight between Mercutio and Tybalt. Who kills whom in this confrontation?

Answer: Tybalt kills Mercutio

Romeo gets married and then sees Tybalt and Mercutio fighting. Because he just got married to Juliet, he feels that he should stop the fight. He steps in to stop it and Tybalt's sword goes under Romeo's arm and accidentally stabs Mercutio. Romeo and Tybalt then start fighting each other and Romeo ends up killing Tybalt. He then must flee the city.
8. The Friar tells Juliet of a plan so that she doesn't have to marry Paris. He gives her a potion that will make her fall asleep and make her look as if she is dead. How many hours does he say the potion will work for?

Answer: 42 hours

The Friar gives Juliet some potion that she has to take right before she goes to bed. ("in this borrow'd likeness of shrunk death
Thou shalt continue two and forty hours..." Act 4, Scene 1) The potion will make her go to sleep for forty two hours making her appear dead. While she is asleep the Friar was going to have a messenger tell Romeo of the plan. But the message never reached Romeo and that is where the plan went wrong.
9. How does Romeo kill himself?

Answer: poison

Balthasar, Romeo's servant, sees Juliet's funeral and reports back to Romeo in Mantua. Upon hearing this bad news, he goes to an apothecary, gets poison and goes to Juliet's tomb. He talks to her, kisses her, and then takes the poison, right before Juliet awakens and therefore commiting suicide.
10. Why does Juliet kill herself?

Answer: she sees that Romeo took poison because he thought that she was dead

Juliet awakens right after Romeo takes the poison and dies. She sees that he is dead and the poison that is in his hands. She realizes that Romeo didn't get the message and that he killed himself over her "death". She then tries to kiss his lips thinking that there may be poison still on them. When that doesn't work she sees his dagger and kills herself.
