1. What creates a sourcerer?

Answer: Being the eighth son of an eighth son of an eighth son

Getting a staff from a dying wizard gives you his talent, but not at sourcerer level. See 'Equal Rites' for the problem that ensues when a wizard accidentally gives his staff to a baby girl.

Being an eighth son is nothing special, but if you have eight sons, that eighth one will be able to be a wizard. But if he eschews the magical requirement of celibacy and fathers eight sons, watch out for that last one!

2. When Rincewind tries to take the flying carpet to the top of the Tower of Art, it doesn't move. Why not?

Answer: He had it upside down

"All right," [Rincewind] conceded, "down. Very, very carefully. Down." This had also happened when he, Conina, Nijel and the Seriph first tried to get the carpet to fly. That time Rincewind thought it just responded opposite to any commands. Later he realizes that the carpet was in fact upside down.

3. What kind of bird has a head like a flamingo, a body like a turkey and legs like a Sumo wrestler?

Answer: A Geas

It belonged to a species unique even among Disc fauna, in that their prime means of defence was to cause a predator to laugh so much that they could run away before it recovered.

4. What is The Luggage doing at the beginning of the story?

Answer: Hibernating on top of the wardrobe

It is still unsure why The Luggage consents to be "owned" by Rincewind.

5. What was the battlecry of Nijel the Destroyer?

Answer: "Erm, excuse me?"

Nijel learned how to be a hero by reading Cohen the Barbarian's book, 'Inne Juste 7 Dayes I wille make You a Barbearian Hero!'.

6. Where did the Vizier of Al Khali finally send Rincewind for punishment?

Answer: The snake pit

"We've run out of spiders."
"The tiger's been ill."

"There's the snake pit, master." There was always the snake pit.

7. What part of Unseen University does the sourcerer order destroyed?

Answer: The Library

The Librarian saves most of the books by breaking the glass in the skylight and getting the books to fly over to the Tower of Art, where they huddled in the tall stairway.

8. Who was Conina's father?

Answer: Cohen the Barbarian

She inherited all his barbarian skills and inclinations, but she really wanted to be a hairdresser.

9. Who was just elected as the new Archchancellor of Unseen University at the beginning of the story?

Answer: Virrid Wayzygoose

Coin (or rather Coin's staff) kills Virrid immediately upon arrival at UU so that he can assume that position. Billias is killed shortly after during a magical 'duel' with Coin. Billias produces Maligree's Wonderful Garden. Coin makes Billias disappear.

10. And finally, who was the sourcerer?

Answer: Coin

All this happened when Coin was just about ten years old. It was all done under the influence of his father, Ipslore the Red, who had a bit of a grudge against the wizards at Unseen University. At the time of his death, he put his soul into his staff, which allowed him to "consul" Coin and force him to do his bidding.
