Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What were the names of Kim's parents?

Answer: Barbara and Levon

Barbara and Levon McDaniels had to deal with their daughter Kim being kidnapped. Much of the first part of the book is from their perspective. They received a phone call very early in the morning warning them that their daughter had "fallen into bad hands." Later, the murderer kidnapped the couple and filmed their death.
2. Ben Hawkins was once employed as what?

Answer: A cop

The McDaniels were interested in meeting Ben because of his history. He approached them and told them that he was a writer for the L.A Times. The parents were willing to speak with him because of his own willingness to open up about his past. He became friends with the couple and tried to help them find their daughter.
3. What made Ben quit his old job?

Answer: He was forced to

Ben told the McDaniels that his old partner stole money from a crime scene. However, the thief was able to pin the blame on Hawkins. His superiors told him he could face a trial for stealing, or he could turn in his badge. Ben handed in his badge and went on to write a handful of novels and get a job with the L.A Times.
4. Who was the original suspect for the Kim McDaniel kidnapping case?

Answer: Doug Cahill

Doug, a linebacker for the Chicago Bears, was automatically pointed to as the main suspect. Even Kim thought that it was he who had kidnapped her. The two had dated, but Doug started to act like a stalker. He appeared on television, weeping, saying he was innocent.
5. Who was the first victim found in the book?

Answer: Rosa

While all were victims of the serial killer Henri, Rosa was the first body found in the story. Rosa Castro was a young girl and was found in the ocean, bound and tied just like the others. She had drowned, along with being strangled. Gina's body was the last found.
6. What color gloves did the murderer prefer?

Answer: Blue

Henri enjoyed creating artistic murder scenes for his viewers. He switched between wearing a mask and digitally blurring his face for the camera, but he always wore the blue gloves that made the movie beautiful.
7. Which of the following was NOT an alias used by the murderer?

Answer: John Lotte

Henri was a master of disguise. He had a unique talent because he was able to switch his accent seamlessly. He called the McDaniels and spoke with an Australian accent that fooled them completely. Marco Benevenuto was the limo driver. Charlie Rollins was a reporter from the fake "Talk Weekly" magazine. Nils Bjorn was a name he used earlier on in his life.

Henri also used the names Andrew Hogan and Paul Meile.
8. Which park/forest did Henri take Ben to?

Answer: Joshua Tree

At gunpoint, Henri forced Ben into his old trailer parked at a hotel. When they parked, Henri had Ben record his life story. The two men stayed there for almost five entire days, working eight hours each day. Henri also signed his agreement with the publisher at the park.
9. What was the name of the publisher who agreed to sign Ben?

Answer: Raven-Wofford

Ben approached his old friend Leonard Zagami about writing the serial killer's life story. Zagami didn't believe Ben until he was shown a short movie about one of his killings. Afterward, the publicist agreed and grew excited about making money from the unique story.
10. What did Henri send Amanda and Ben while they dined?

Answer: A bottle of Dom Perignon

Ben and Amanda thought that they had received someone else's order. But then they found the letter that came with the bottle: "The Dom's on me. It's the good stuff. Best regards, H.B." Ben searched his phone and computer to see if they had been bugged, but found nothing. The couple had no idea how he knew they were there.
11. How did Henri always know where Ben was?

Answer: He'd placed a GPS under his skin

While Ben and Amanda were cuddling, Amanda told Ben she felt something hard under his skin. The couple pulled a small metallic GPS device out of Ben's body by using a razor to cut and mouthwash to sanitize. Apparently after Ben had been knocked unconscious previously, Henri had bugged Ben.
12. What type of gun did Ben purchase in Paris?

Answer: .38 Smith and Wesson

Ben described his .38 Smith and Wesson as being feminine. He purchased the weapon because he knew that Henri would be in Paris. He knew Henri traveled to Paris every September, so he made sure he had a weapon to confront the murderer. Ben ended up taking Henri's silenced gun away, using it later to confront Jan Van der Heuvel.
13. Why did Amanda travel to Paris after Ben?

Answer: She had important news

She announced to Ben that they were going to have a baby. This was over a nice dinner on a street in Paris. Ben stood and cheerfully bowed to the mother of his child. Unfortunately, it was this scene that caused Henri to find out that Ben had tracked him all of the way to Paris.
14. Which of the following people was NOT part of the Alliance?

Answer: Nils Van Meir

With the help of Henri, Ben was able to help bring the surviving "Peepers," or members of the Alliance, to justice. Henri killed Gina, whom he thought had betrayed him. At the end of the novel Ben wrote that all members were being accused of murder.
15. Before Ben's final confrontation, what did he ask Amanda?

Answer: For her hand in marriage

Ben took Amanda's hand and drew a wedding ring around her finger. He then asked her to marry him. Amanda cried, said yes, and promised not to wash the "ring" off until it was replaced with a real one. The two end up in a foreign country together, in love, and about to have a baby.
