Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "The False Prince", who tripped Sage when he was running from the butcher after stealing the roast?

Answer: Mott

Sage was running from the butcher when Mott (working for Bevin Conner) stuck out his leg to trip Sage. The butcher began kicking Sage when Bevin Conner told him to stop. Conner paid the butcher for the roast and then also purchased Sage from Mrs. Turbeldy's orphanage to be Conner's "servant".
2. Who answered the question "Who are the current king and queen of Carthya" correctly in "The False Prince"?

Answer: Tobias

Sage answered first, but incorrectly stated that the Queen's name was Corinne. Tobias gave the correct answer, King Eckbert and Queen Erin. Conner rewarded Tobias with a piece of bread. We discover later that Sage really knew the answer, but was hiding his true identity.
3. In "The False Prince", while pretending to be a servant at the feast for Princess Amarinda, what was Sage's first mistake?

Answer: Staring directly at the princess

Sage was specifically instructed not to stare directly at Princess Amarinda, but he noticed that there was dirt on her cheek, so he couldn't help staring at her face. Princess Amarinda was surprised that a servant had the audacity to stare, but was amused and flattered when Sage told her that the dirt did not detract from her beauty.
4. In "The False Prince", why was Sage so concerned with keeping the clothes he had arrived in?

Answer: His rock was in one of his pockets

The rock, from Sage's father (King Eckbert), was the key to Sage proving to Kerwyn that he was truly Jaron. When Conner found out that Sage wanted his old clothes, Conner inspected the pockets, found the rock and kept it from Sage. Sage then "stole" it back, leading to a stay in the dungeon where he was shackled and whipped. Sage still would not give up the rock, symbolizing that Conner did not own him.
5. When Sage and Roden were fighting by the river in "The False Prince", how was the crown lost?

Answer: Cregan pulled the crown into the river with him as he fell in dead

Cregan lunged at Sage with his knife, but Mott interfered and stabbed Cregan. As Cregan fell into the river, he grabbed the crown from Mott's hand and both Cregan and the crown went into the river. Tobias then offered to find the crown for Sage. Tobias succeeded just in time to crown him King Jaron.
6. In "The Runaway King", why did Roden attack King Jaron on the day of Jaron's family's funeral?

Answer: Roden was sent by the pirates to warn Jaron about the pirate's imminent attack in ten days if Jaron does not surrender to them

Roden had joined up with the pirates and wanted to kill Jaron (Roden still thought Jaron was just Sage the orphan), but the pirate king wanted Jaron, so Roden was sent to demand Jaron's surrender in ten days. Roden's sword skills were excellent and Jaron was impressed.
7. Why did Jaron lie and tell Imogen that he was only using her to become King in "The Runaway King"?

Answer: He wanted her to be far from him so that she would be safe

Jaron knew that the only way Imogen would be safe was if she willingly went away, so he said cruel, untrue things to her. Jaron cared more about Imogen than anyone else, but others could use that to get to Jaron, by harming her. Telling Imogen that he did not care for her was the most difficult thing that Jaron had to do, but it was the only way to protect her.
8. In "The Runaway King", who killed Nila's mother?

Answer: Fendon

When Jaron was with the thieves in "The Runaway King", Fendon revealed to Erick that he recognized Jaron and had fought with him. Jaron then told Erick that Fendon killed a woman and almost killed the woman's young daughter (Nila). Erick was furious, and reminded Fendon that the thieves' code should be the same as the pirates' code, no harming women or children, because they are innocents.
9. Who told Jaron to steal the meat cleaver from the kitchen at Tarblade Bay in "The Runaway King"?

Answer: Agor

When Jaron arrived at Tarblade Bay, Agor wanted Jaron to prove himself as a good thief. Agor knew that the meat cleaver was looked after closely and would be difficult to steal, but Imogen was working in the kitchen and gave it to him. Jaron was surprised that Imogen was at the pirates' camp. Imogen explained that the pirates were looking for kitchen help, and they treated the women well at the camp.
10. In "The Runaway King", what was Roden's reaction when the pirate kicked Jaron as Roden and Jaron were fighting?

Answer: Roden was angry at the pirate for interfering

Jaron was fighting with an injured leg and he still managed to fight well against Roden. Just when Jaron had his sword at Roden's neck and was asking Roden to be the captain of the Carthyan armies, another pirate tried to help and kicked Jaron on his bad leg. Roden was furious because he wanted to win the fight fairly.
11. In "The Shadow Throne", what weapons did the armies of Gelyn use?

Answer: Pikes and halberds

Because the Gelynians used pikes and halberds, the sword-wielding Carthyan soldiers needed to change their fighting strategies. The fighters from Gelyn could swing their sharp pikes before the Carthyans could get close enough with their swords. The Gelynians were limited to only fighting in a forward direction, so Jaron began attacking them from behind, which worked well.
12. How did Jaron convince Roden that Roden was worthy of being captain, in "The Shadow Throne"?

Answer: Jaron gave examples from his own life about how he earned respect

Jaron recognized that Roden needed some encouragement to motivate him and give him the confidence to be the leader that Jaron knew Roden could be. Jaron mentioned his own mistakes and terrible decisions, but insisted that he was not wrong about Roden's ability to lead and Roden should not doubt Jaron's decision to make Roden captain.

He then told Roden that his men would not respect him just because he was captain, Roden must earn their respect.
13. In "The Shadow Throne", how did Jaron find out that Mendenwal had a cannon and was bringing it to fight in Drylliad?

Answer: A captured Gelynian captain told Jaron about the cannon

When Jaron heard that Mendenwal was planning to use a cannon against the castle in Drylliad, Jaron went looking for it. He then found the cannon and disabled it by packing a huge amount of gunpowder into the barrel and the breech. About an hour later, Jaron felt the ground shake and saw a plume of black smoke.

The cannon had been blown apart as the Mendenwal soldiers were trying to test it.
14. In "The Shadow Throne", how did Jaron taunt Kippenger during the final battle at Farthenwood?

Answer: He put a garlin on the ledge and ordered Kippenger to get it

When Jaron was in chains in Kippenger's jail, Kippenger put a garlin (Carthynian currency) just out of Jaron's reach as a lesson to Jaron that he should give up. During the final battle, Jaron used a garlin on the ledge at Farthenwood to prove to Kippenger that Jaron had won.
15. Why did Jaron hesitate to tell Roden that Harlowe was Roden's father in "The Shadow Throne"?

Answer: Jaron was jealous because Harlowe was like a father to Jaron

Not only was Jaron worried that he would lose the love of Harlowe as a father figure, Jaron also thought it might be cruel to tell Roden that Harlowe was his father when Roden might be hanged before he could ever get to know Harlowe. Jaron, of course, knew that telling both Harlowe and Roden was the right thing to do, and he revealed it to them as soon as everyone was safe.
