Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the film, Melekhin is a lieutenant. In the book, what rank is he?

Answer: Captain First- Rank

For some reason they reduced Comrade Melekhin by three ranks in the film. He is Ramius' equal in rank, but since he was the engineer, the vagaries of the Soviet Navy meant he could be an Admiral and still be the subordinate his Captain.
2. In the film, Executive Officer Vasily Borodin was shot and killed by Loginov (the GRU agent posing as a crewman). Who was Loginov's victim in the book?

Answer: Navigational Officer Gregoriy Kamarov

Kamarov was sent to seal all hatches with the British officer Williams (not in film). When they were returning through the missile bay, Loginov shot them both, but Williams survived. Loginov never approached the control room.
3. What establishment does Bart Mancuso's father own?

Answer: Barber Shop

Bart Mancuso comes from a long line of barbers, and his father used to shut the shop every autumn for the annual deer hunt. Bart didn't want to be a barber, though, and joined the navy instead.
4. At what age did Bart Mancuso kill his first deer?

Answer: 12

As I said in the last question, Bart's father used to hunt deer and he'd take Bart with him.
5. In the book, Tupolev hung back after the fleet had returned to Russia. It was at this point that the encounter between Tupolev and Ramius occurred. What vessel did Tupolev initially think the Red October was?

Answer: US Ohio class SSBN

Tupolev had been told by Moscow that Red October was dead, but to stay behind in case he could pick up any intelligence. At first he thought the anomalous reading on his sonar was an Ohio class, the US equivalent of a Typhoon. He decided to follow it, since only four previous times had the Soviets ever tracked an Ohio.
6. In the book, which Soviet vessel died following a reactor meltdown?

Answer: ES Politovskiy, Alfa Class

It was the Politovskiy who died. His reactor had been running 100 percent for four days, which was far too much stress. The chief engineer requested that power be lowered for a few hours in order for repairs to be made. However, the political officer had said no, and so the damage got worse until the inevitable happened.
7. IN THE BOOK: USS Dallas trailed Red October right from the start at Poliyarniy- True or False?

Answer: False

In the book another Los Angeles class, the Bremerton, trailed Red October. She lost contact when the caterpillar was engaged, and Red October was next picked up by the Dallas near Iceland.
8. In the book, the Red October took a torpedo. Where?

Answer: Port midships

The Konovalov fired two torpedoes, the first of which hit a sonar decoy that Bugayev created while the second was guided to to Red October by the sonar chief on Konovalov. It struck Red October Port midships and tore a twelve-foot hole in the outer hull, but the layered armour of Red October was enough to sufficiently dissipate the impact force.
9. In the book, Red October launched a nuclear missile. Why?

Answer: As a measure to prevent the vessel's destruction

Loginov had, as far as the remaining crew knew, succeeded in planting his boobytrap in the guidance compartment. Ryan suggested that they jettison the missile in question, to which Captain Ramius agreed. They launched the missile but it was not allowed to travel far; it plummeted to the sea bed, three miles below, the casing being crushed in the process.

It became an unexpectedly fortunate part in the deception of the Russians that Red October had been destroyed.
10. In which former Soviet Union country was Ramius born?

Answer: Lithuania

Ramius' father was a great Soviet hero, liberating Lithuania from the Germans while Marko was but a child. The elder Ramius recieved his promotion to the central committee leaving Ramius to be brought up by his grandmother back in Vilnius. Despite the hero status, the Ramiuses were Lithuanian.
11. In the film, Red October was hidden in Penobscot river, near Searsport. In the book, where was she hidden?

Answer: Ocracoke Inlet

For some reason, they were way out in the film. Probably something to do with the fact that Ryan grew up there so that he could talk to Ramius about fishing. Oh, how Hollywood changes things for the screen...
12. What was the name, in the book, of Red October's final resting place?

Answer: 8/10 dock, Norfolk Naval base

The 8/10 dock was built to maintain the Ohios, and is covered for protection from satellites. The Red October was placed here to prevent the Russians from seeing her, in order for the Americans to dismantle her secretly.
13. Name the vessel which, in the book, accompanied the Dallas and the Red October into port.

Answer: Pogy

The Pogy is a less advanced sub than the Dallas, an attack sub the Americans assigned to protect Red October. She never appeared in the film.
14. Vasily Borodin would never be allowed his own command. Why?

Answer: He accused a political officer of homosexuality

The Soviet navy has strict policy on behaviour. Vasily accused a zampolit, and so was blacklisted even though his performance and leadership were exemplary.
15. What did the Americans call the caterpillar in the book?

Answer: Tunnel Drive

Interestingly, they call it a tunnel drive. This makes sense, but the Russian name of caterpillar does not. The reason it is unofficially called caterpillar is because an engineer gave it that nickname in the development stage. The term Magneto-hydronamic propulsion is the scientific name for it, but is not used in the book. Only in the film does Oliver Tyler call it that.
