Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hello, my name is Anthony/Pokemonkid3, and my favourite book is set in a dystopian future, where teenagers are chosen by lottery, and forced to fight to the death in an arena. What book am I talking about?

Answer: The Hunger Games

"The Hunger Games" is actually a trilogy, written by Suzanne Collins, and has been made into a bestselling film starring Jennifer Lawrence as the main character Katniss Everdeen. In the story, Northern America has been split into twelve Districts, and a Capitol. Each year, The Capitol chooses one boy and one girl from each District to send into the arena. The last one standing is pronounced the victor, and is set for life. The reason the games exist is that years before, the Districts rebelled against the Capitol.
2. Hello, I'm William/HairyBear, and my recommended read is a nonfiction title. It was the follow-up to Eric Berne's "Games People Play", and is in the same vein as "I'm Okay, You're Okay" and "Born to Win".

Answer: What Do You Say After You Say Hello?

"A Monetary History of the United States" was the shelf-bending tome by Milton Friedman which won him the Nobel Prize for Economics. "John Adams" was an excellent biography of America's first revolutionary and second president by David McCullough. (Note: It's the only biography I ever read that starts in the middle of someone's life rather than at the beginning or end.) "The Mystery of Edwin Drood" was Charles Dickens' last book and was fictional.

"WDYSAYSH" was life-changing for me. I don't just recommend it, I URGE you to read it. It starts off talking about Transactional Analysis, but it goes much much further than that. It's deep, powerful, painful, eye-opening, and in the end, liberating. Read it. Go now.
3. Kvrad here... one of my all-time favorite books is by an author whose brother was also a famous writer. In this book he describes a period of several years when his widowed mother takes her brood from England to live on the island of Corfu. It is there that the author developed a life-long passion for nature, and collecting animals. What is this book?

Answer: My Family and Other Animals

Gerald Durrell, a naturalist, is somewhat overshadowed as a writer by his older brother, Lawrence ("The Alexandria Quartet"), but I suspect he had a larger audience of faithful readers for his many books detailing his travels around the world as he collected animals for different zoos, including the one he eventually established on the Channel Island of Jersey. "A Zooin My Luggage" was another one of his 40 plus books.
4. I'm rosifer and my choice is a children's book about a game of chess written by Charles Dodgson. Although not as famous as his previous book featuring the same heroine and a deck of cards, I prefer the sequel.

Answer: Through the Looking Glass

The full title is of course, "Through the Looking Glass, And What Alice Found There". The first book written by Dodgson, better known as Lewis Carroll, about this heroine was "Alice's Adventures In Wonderland". It is widely believed that Dodgson was inspired to write both books by Alice Liddell, the daughter of his dean at Christ Church College.
5. KCallies just enjoyed this biography of a famous presidential wife. She did amazing things with her position, was known for her compassion and sense of justice, and later became a delegate to the United Nations.

Answer: Eleanor Roosevelt, Life of Discovery

The books was written by Russell Freedman. Roosevelt championed civil rights, she was against the Japanese Internment, she fought against abuse of children and animals as well as drafted the UN Declaration on Human Rights.
6. I, FionaFireWolf, have recently enjoyed a wonderful book in a trilogy. It is a heart-stopping book for young adults, but one I think enjoyable for all ages. In this book, there are five factions, each representing a characteristic. This tale takes us through the life of a dauntless young girl, and will also take your breath away.

Answer: Divergent

~SPOILER ALERT!~
"Divergent" is a book by Veronica Roth. The five factions are Dauntless, Abnegation, Erudite, Amity, and Candor. The protagonist of this series is Tris Prior. This book will undoubtedly captivate you with the views of Tris. Please do me a favor. Go read this book. It will be worth your while. ^_^
7. Hi! I'm Janet Gool, and my favorite book is a French classic. The heroine of this book is influenced by romantic literature, commits adultery, and in the end kills herself. What could this book be?

Answer: "Madame Bovary" by Gustave Flaubert

Published first in 1865, "Madame Bovary" is the story of Emma, the daughter of a well-to-do farmer. Emma is educated in a convent and reads romances, that make her long for a more exciting life. Bored with her marriage to Charles, a rather unsuccessful doctor, she has an affair first with her neighbor, Rodolphe Boulanger, and then with a young student, Leon Dupuis.
8. Hello, I'm SonOfSaradoc and my moniker is related to one of the characters in my favorite book, or rather, trilogy. What book includes Meriadoc, son of Saradoc, as one of the Nine Companions?

Answer: The Lord of the Rings

"The Lord of the Rings" was not actually written as a trilogy, but has six 'books,' plus prologues and appendices, published in three volumes in the 1950s. J.R.R. Tolkien's masterpiece of Middle-earth, with its hobbits and elves, dwarves and wizards, is consistently ranked as among the most popular books of the twentieth century.
9. Brewpack here. This book is a biography of possibly the greatest coach of all time. The super bowl trophy is named after him. David Maraniss is the author who wrote the book in 1999.

Answer: When Pride Still Mattered

"When Pride Still Mattered" goes into great depth about legendary coach Vince Lombardi. The book covers not only Vince as a coach but his relationships with family, players and friends. This book reveals how some characteristics that Vince displayed may have made him a great coach but caused personal strife in his life.
10. Chris/logikzer0 enjoys the works of Carl Sagan, known for his non-fiction work in cosmology and his atheistic philosophy. However, this particular book was a novel published in 1985 about a scientist who discovers a message from an alien civilization. What is the name of the novel that was made into a 1997 movie with Jodie Foster?

Answer: Contact

Carl Sagan was a leading cosmological scientist and science educator of his time. His works include "Pale Blue Dot", "Demon Haunted World", "Cosmos" and "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors." He is well-known for hosting the original television series "Cosmos," which has recently been rebooted and is being hosted by Neil Degrasse Tyson.
