Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Victoria was sacked by Mr. Greenholtz he wanted to give her a week's salary in lieu of notice. By how much money was he short when he tried to pay her?

Answer: ninepence

Victoria got the sack after Mr. Greenholtz had heard her doing an unfavourable impersonation of his wife. She did persuade him to write her a reference, albeit one that was not exactly glowing, before she left in search of adventure and intrigue.
2. In which place was Victoria sitting when she first met Edward?

Answer: FitzJames Gardens

Victoria ate her lunch in FitzJames Gardens most days. Far from being upset by the loss of her job, she was contemplating the future with excitement. When Edward appeared she was struck by his good looks and it was because he was going to Baghdad that she decided to try to get there herself.
3. Why did Mrs. Hamilton-Clipp need someone to travel to Baghdad with her?

Answer: She had broken her arm

Mrs. Hamilton-Clipp was going to visit her daughter in Iraq, but had fallen in Westminster Abbey and broken her arm. Her husband George was unable to accompany her, so Victoria went as her companion.
4. Victoria told Mrs. Hamilton-Clipp that her uncle was the Bishop of where?

Answer: Llangow

Victoria produced references from the Bishop to help her secure the position with Mrs. Hamilton-Clipp. She later changed his title to Bishop of Languao, to avoid being caught out by Mrs. Cardew Trench, whom she met in Iraq.
5. How did Carmichael signal to Richard Baker in the consulate in Basrah?

Answer: clicking his amber beads

Richard was warned by the clicking of the beads, which Carmichael was using to send him a message in Morse code, and acknowledged the message by tapping his pipe on an ashtray. Alerted, he was able to knock aside the revolver wielded by the man making an attempt on Carmichael's life.
6. What was the name of Marcus Tio's hotel in Baghdad?

Answer: The Tio

Victoria went to stay at the Tio on arrival in Baghdad and discovered that the well known traveller, Sir Rupert Crofton Lee, was also staying there. Marcus Tio went out of his way to be helpful to Victoria.
7. After her escape from captivity in the house in Mandali, who rescued Victoria from the desert?

Answer: Richard Baker

Victoria was horrified when Richard said that he was going to Dr. Pauncefoot Jones' dig, but as she had already told him that she was Dr. Pauncefoot Jones' niece she had no choice but to go along with him. Fortunately, the Doctor was very vague about anything other than his work and although Richard Baker was very suspicious about Victoria, Dr. Pauncefoot Jones did not notice anything wrong with his 'neice'.
8. What shocked Victoria when she got to The Expedition House, after she had been rescued from the desert?

Answer: Her dark hair had been dyed blonde

Her captors had dyed Victoria's hair while she was held prisoner so that she would be able to impersonate Anna Scheele. Anna Scheele was to disappear in the same manner as Sir Rupert and then the newly-blonde Victoria would travel in her place.
9. Grete Harden was really Anna Scheele.

Answer: false

She was put on the flight so that the conspiritors would have their attention on her, not on the real Anna Scheele.
10. With whom did Victoria plan to work at the end of the book?

Answer: Richard Baker

Victoria decided that she had had enough of falling for handsome young men and that she would choose instead someone interesting. Fortunately, Richard had been extremely concerned about Victoria once she had disappeared from Baghdad after their trip to the city to collect some supplies!
